Wont Start

Hi Guys,

Sorry if this has been covered before - did a search but nothing jumped out.

Peculiar problem with my GS started at the weekend. Went out to meet some friends, when I came back to make a move, tried to start the bike and what I think was the starter solenoid 'clicked' and the display went blank. This happened several more times. I checked and tightened the battery terminals, but no luck, so caved and phoned BMW emergency service (hooray for extended warrenties!)
A chap turned up and checked the battery (making 11-12V) jump started the bike (making 14V when running), but when switched off refused to start again. When the fault showed the voltage was
Jump started again, so I made an attempt for home which lasted about 20 meters before the bike cut out when attempting to go for 2nd gear.

So, bike came home on the back of a lorry. I put the bike charge to see if that would help. Its been on for 36hrs, just went to see if she would start, but no joy.
However, I put the multimeter on to see what the battery was doing, and when attempting to start it, the voltage dropped from between 11 - 12V to 4V.

The question is, is the battery goosed or will I have to use "The Ride of Shame" again and get the bike back to the dealer?

Try disconecting the battery and fully charging it then do a discharge test on it. sounds to me like the battery could be knackered !!! hope this helps

Only 4v on load = next use for the battery is as a door stop

battery... they last 2 winters on the GS.... Odyssey ones last 3....

So if yours fails in the second year of the warranty you'll get 4 winters included

Thanks for the help guys - waiting on delivery of a new battery, hopefully will get that today and get her working again.

Battery chargers can't mend internal battery faults. Trouble is they can't be relied on to tell you if the battery is fully charged to the level you hope it is.

It was the battery - got a new one and connected it, started on the button.

However, its an Odessey battery I bought, and it hasnt been the 10min job I thought it was going to be.....

Spent over £100 quid on supposed new battery from MDS ,knackered after a few months,won't refund or replace BE WARNED!

Thank God, the truth will out! First GS battery, replaced under warranty at less than a year, second was a cheap one after a year and a bit, last was an Odyssey which started to give up the ghost after 2 and a bit. I know that my commute is short but non of my jap bikes suffered like this. My current battery (2010 bike, original battery) just limped through last winter. Why can man invent such new technological wonders in the computer world but the faithful battery remains so old tech?

The original battery on my 2013 GSA seems to have given up the ghost - I suspect it's since starting to use a heated jacket, charging my sat nav and running heated grips, I took it off to charge it up (optimate). I put the battery back on after an overnight charge and went to start the bike confident that she'd fire up on the button BUT - it took lots and lots of cranking to get running and I can't understand why this would be?? Seems to be starting and running OK now. It was as if there was a lack of fuel in the system..

Any clues anyone?

I have an Odyssey on order as a replacement battery.

Get a MotoBatt... Cheaper then odyssey and just as good...

I bought my 06 gsa in July 2008 with 6,000 miles on it, it had an odyssee battery already fitted,
It's never been on an optimate even over the winter when I don't use it for 4+ months, it's never let me down, I still think all this optimate usage fucks up batteries.
My oe battery on my TLS lasted 9 years the second one 5, never on an optimate, it now has a 30 quid cheapo battery on it that I picked up at the bmf still going strong.
Maybe I've just been lucky I don't know, but I know of other people who have had multiple batteries on their bikes,
