I've been wanting to notify people about this for a while, but kind of have forgotten about it 10 seconds later.

In Denmark it is illegal to carry a knife which have a blade which is more than 7 cm long, or if blade is lockable (lockable blade overrides everything else). The law is here (translated with Google)

It is punishable with prison sentence from 1 year and up, and there is no excuse what so ever in the eyes of the law.

There are exceptions, but they don't have much of a sense of humor.

DK is very hot on carrying knives right now, a craft knife in a glove compartment of a car was enough to get someone B&B for a week at the start of September this year.

The good news is guns are OK :D

We took two rifles and a lot of ammunition over start of September for a weeks 600m shooting and not once were we asked for sight of our FAC's or European Firearm Passes at UK/DK customs, I even purchased ammunition in DK with out being asked for my FAC.

The only observation made was by UK customs going out, the woman described them as 'One black one and one nice one'

Casper..

Seriously, no blades at all over 7cm? Does that mean carrying on your person or in your luggage (camping) bike/car (tool for emergency)???

What does Ray Mears do in Denmark - maybe he just doesn't go there!

I know, I did not write up the law. I think if it's knife for a specific task, like hunting then it can be as long as 12cm - that means most tools for camping should be safe - I carry a lockable knife in my travel kit, but it's always in the deepest corner of my luggage (and then only when I do transit).

Also there are knife-free zones especially in Copenhagen where a carrying a knife no matter size will give you an unwelcome trip to the police station if they they find it.

I've not lived there for some years, and only know what I read in the news papers, but this is mostly due to gang violence, which is currently at it's worst.

I've send an email to the Danish Police with a couple of questions, I'll post the answers here if I ever get one....

Don't worry

This applies to Norway (and Sweden?) too, but the law is not designed to take away your Leatherman or cooking knife. You are not allowed to carry a knife in public unless you have a good reason. Hunting, camping, etc, is considered a good reason. Basically, don't bring it to the pub and you're ok.

At a small note, it does seem that the law is enforced stricter in Denmark than in Norway. And if you "look like a biker", be a bit careful. HA, Bandidos and Outlaws have been rather visible, especially in Denmark.

I finally got a response from the police in Denmark on the question.

In general it's legal to carry a knife if 1) it's being used in connection with sport (camping??), hunting, etc, 2) if not being used in connection with 1) the blade have to be 7cm or less, and cannot be lockable.

On top of that there are zones in the bigger cities where having a knife is illegal no matter what (leave it in the bottom of the panniers).

On this occasion the National Police initially refer to § 4 paragraph. 1, of Legislative Decree No 704 of 22 June 2009 on weapons and explosives (Firearms Act), which reads:

"In public places, educational institutions, youth clubs, clubs and similar, it is prohibited to carry or possess a knife or dagger, unless as part of the profession, for use in hunting, fishing or sport or other similar creditable purpose. The ban does not include folding knives with blades of up to 7 cm, which can not be locked in the unfolded position. "

Under this provision, it is not lawful to carry or possess a folding knife in publicly accessible places, where the knife can be locked in the unfolded position. However, it is allowed to carry folding knives with blades of up to 7 cm, which can not be locked in the unfolded position. Is the knife used for professional activities, for use in hunting, fishing or sport or other similar creditable purposes, imposes no conditions regarding blade lock conditions in the unfolded position.

National Police may also refer to the explanatory memorandum to amend the Firearms Act (L 2004-03-31 No. 217) where it is noted that public place, are places which are generally available.

It is also clear from these explanatory memorandum that possession of a knife in a car in public places are considered within the prohibition in § 4, paragraph. 1.

National Police must also refer to § 14 paragraph. 1, No. 1, of Decree No. 449 of 9 June 2005 (weapons Order), after which it is prohibited without permission from the police director to acquire, possess, carry or use weapons or sharp pointed weapon if the blade exceeds 12 cm. Attention is drawn however on notice § 14 paragraph. 3, which reads as follows:

"Daggers and knives, if the blade exceeds 12 cm, may, notwithstanding paragraph. 1, No. 1, without permission used in commercial, household, or by hunting, fishing or scuba diving, if they designed it. [...] These weapons can be acquired, held and carried to such use. They can also be transferred or handed over to others if they are satisfied that the purchaser or the recipient will only use them as stated. "

National Police must also refer you to contact the arms of a police office in the police district where you live, because issues and application for permits related to weapons must be made therefor. You can find contact information for all police districts in www.politi.dk.
