Worn ring gear or not?

Hi all
Just wondering if you have any thoughts on if this ring gear looks particularly worn or not. 02 1150GS 52k on the clock.
The starter and battery are both new within the last few weeks and the alternator seems to be charging ok, Volts coming through on tickover are around the 13.9-14.1V. With no massive drop awap in Volts on start-up.
When you release the starter button it sounds like the starter & ringgear are not meshing properly and clattering away.

Either the ring gear is worn or my after market starter motor is crap and should have stuck with a valeo.

I've seen a fair few fecked ring gears. They're usually burred over far more than in your picture.

What make is the after market starter motor ? and was the reason for replacing it because of any noises ?

Hi Neil,
The starter motor make is unknown supplied by these people http://www.woodauto.com/ as a direct replacement for the Valeo. The old valeo was fitted as was lazy on start-up and at the time looked to be cheaper at £124 delivered to replace than have it refurbished.

Might potentially have been a false economy in hindsight as Sherlocks are offering new Valeos for £160 now

I've been here with after market starter motors and found it was rubbish: It smashed its case within two weeks.

If you rotate that ring gear and find it similar all the way around I think you'll find it should be okay. They always seem to land at one resting point and the starter gear always engages in the same ring gear teeth and it is those which take a hammering.

Don't throw that one away if you decide to change it.

Check all round.....the broken teeth will always be on the other side

Once you can find them, or move the ring gear a bit. chances are you won't have the same problem again for years
