Worn splines on starter motor?

Anyone got a picture showing the pinion splines from an R1150GS Valeo starter motor? I’ve got a starting problem with my bike and have just removed the starter motor for inspection – to my untrained eye the splines on the pinion look very worn indeed. When I try and start the bike all I get is a metallic clicking noise – I’m guessing that the pinion is slipping on the flywheel due to worn splines. Does this sound about right? Any other possibilities?

Turned out to be nothing more than a knackered battery – still, I’ve learnt something on the way.
