Hi EVERYone !

Just a note to say you folks have made me laugh out loud 4 real. Thanks for cheering me up! The LAST thing that would ever put me off a GS is any age-ism crap! But I thought it'll get me a reply and for my first post it has. (Hope readers had a laugh too...)

I'm still dreaming folks and I started this thread a bit tounge in cheek style. Must admit I am really pleased to see how well you all use your brain cause your levels of argument are cool.

Obviously you folks are not a dumb crowd! Cool, hope one day I can be posting a "JUST BOUGHT MY GS !!!" thread...

What really is a worry for me, besides from finance blah blah is that I am a short-arse. Can't change the fact I'm 5.5... is any rider of a GS short or are you all 6ft some-ink...

I'll post a pic soon of my present bike so you can have a laugh at my expense!

In the meantime, I'm getting used to my new keyboard !

Keyboard - interesting I haven't seen one like that for years - we just think and the threads appear as text on the website ..... bit like riding a GS really - it sort of becomes part of you after a while.

I am thinking about buying a new bike for my cross Europe / Africa or Far East trip I have been planning & dreaming for years.

I am 37 and my biggest worry is that everyone knows the average age of a BMW rider is 49.2 years old.

Is anyone on this board under 40?

BTW hi everyone I'm new here!

Grow a beard, then nobody will suspect you're too young to ride a BMW :beerjug:

However, presently I'm not in need of the services of a Dating Agency.
My 'between the sheets' requirements are being adequately serviced by my new girlfriend to my complete satisfaction.

I may try and test ride an Adventure if I can wrangle it! Wish me luck please...

Sorry folks but no more posts from me for a few more days cause I'll be away from my comp. Thanks for the warm welcome it's been fun. Take care and keep up the BMW loyalty!

I reckon this is a wind up. If you're seriously planning a trip like you say you are, you should take the best tool for the job, which would be a GS.

If you worry about what others think, stay at home and buy a plastic crotch rocket instead.

I bought my first B*W when I was 22 - why ? cos they were doing an excellent finance deal on them. I'm now 40 and on my fourth B*W.

I suspect you haven't actually tried one yet - do this, and make a decision based on whether you actually like the thing or not - and stuff what anyone else thinks.

carbo whatever...

well done mate - must be a record breaking first thread. I am 36 and like most people don´t give a rats what other people think about BMW. The GS is a bit different to othe BMs and there are just too many overland pages with GSs to list. I also have a R100RS motorsport (1978). I can´t say I like BMW is general (especially as they seem determined to make all the clubs theirs and I´ll be fucked if I´ll participate in any of them). There are other BMs I would buy (they dont make any of them now). I had a R1100R which frankly was pretty good. I suspect that if they continue down the path they are going then my next BM (please God an R1150GSA) will be the last.

I am 36, ride on road and off and don´t like my bike being dirty but not enough to clean it. If you are overlanding any GS is fine, most overlanders seem to prefer the R100GS or R80G/S bikes over the 1100 or 1150 models (simplicity). First thing to do is buy adventure motorcycling by chris scott and make your own mind up.

If cash is an issue try www.mobile.de, they are cheaper in Germany.
cheers

Traded in an Africa Twin for my first Beemer, an R100GS, in 1992, at the age of 28 (not twenty-eight, it's in hexadecimal - let's see who paid attention in Maths - oh, all right, my daughter says that it's the same as 40 in real money - I guess that at 51 this makes me an old b*gger).

Loved the GS to bits - literally - so had to replace it. It had had a hard life, having been owned by the Kent plod (I believe) and had gone once round the clock without losing its good looks. Wish I could say the same about me.

More recently, I realised I was less than happy with my K1100LT - bland, too sanitised and too licence-threatening - so I swapped it for a CS (said in hushed tones) which I absolutely adore. I hope to add a GS at some stage, wife and job permitting.

What does that say about me? (Don't answer that!)

Age not relevant

Well all that's been said about the GS being unique, it's true.

The GS 1150 is unique amongst the BMW fleet ( and the majority of bikes i would imagine) for having the single most uncomfortable seat going. IT'S A PILE SHIT.... the crappiest perch Ive ever used.

Now I dont know about you lot but to spend £9000 on a bike that's perported, marketed to be the ultimate tourer-cum-do-it-all, bike and then discover that you cant ride any more than 50 miles without your arse feeling like it's gonna drop off, is plain unacceptable.

Do we put this bike on a pedastal, and brush under the carpet the fact that one of the most important elements of the bike - namely its joke-of-a-seat- is useless, or do we let BMW know?

I am disheartened to the point of not wanting to use my spankers new GS for any long jouirney. Which is what i bought it for.

Yes perhaps i am being negative, and i have read a lot of the threads about the seat of this bike. And yes it probably is the state of play that we hand over our wad - the largest wad I've ever handed over for 'the ultimate bike' - only to find that we then part with even more money to sort out what fundementally, should have been sorted out from the start.

The seat is disgraceful, the rest of the bike is ace. But I'm gonna write a letter to BMW stating this to see wot they say. Which will probably be FA.

I dont wanna part with more cash to fix something that IMHO should be fixed. But i will probably have to in order to keep this bike that i love.

So, you may ask, if i love this bike so, why am i ranting?

BECAUSE THE GODDAM BLOODY SEAT SHOULD BE GODDAM SORTED AFTER 9 YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT.

Yours truely let down and pissed off

Oh FTR: I'm 37!

I'm 27, bought my 1100 GS at 26 and don't know of a better all rounder. Then again I couldn't give a toss what anybody else thinks.

oh and I also grew a beard (but it is a very silly beard)

If your worried about what everyone else thinks then dont buy one, see if you can find something better for your trip. How about a Gilera DNA they are a young persons bike
