Would a base model be a nice motorcycle, or should one really pony up for one heavily optioned?

Base model value come resale time will suck. Who wants a base model, FFS?

Me. Especially if I buy secondhand and the resale value 'sucks'. In my experience you get more spec for your buck buying second-hand and you never get money back for farkles that you forked out for when you bought

The OP was asking about the 1300 and what its like with basic suspension with a view to ordering brand new, you are just rambling about your own buying preferences specific to you and having no practical knowledge of the 1300?

Just looked and you have a 2006 GS? Nice bike but things have moved on.

I have owned more recent BM's and other makes since, the GS was/is a workhorse (75K miles since I bought new). I owned a 1200R LC with ESA which was fine but not as nice as my GS fitted with Wilbers. I've had a test ride of a 1300 and do fancy one, it's the first GS since the first 1200 (that I still own) that I am tempted by, the GS models between got more and more 'fussy' IMHO, the 1300 has some of the first 1200 character. The latest electronic malarkey leaves me cold, I'll keep an out for a base 1300 with alloy wheels if I decide to get one.

steady on with that sort of talk its not allowed!! You wonder how much effort they've put into the basic shock spec given virtually none seem to get ordered but if its not your bag fair enough, I know from my Himalayan that no frills suspension can be good (y)

Sold my base model 1250GS 2019 to Super Bike Factory in 2022. Lost the VAT. Bike was 3 years old with around 5000 miles. Only extra was heated grips and CC. No luggage or fancy Akro. My previous 3 GSLC were all basic, my present 1250RS is basic. The basic 1300GS basic test bike (NOG) after I fiddled with the set up was just like my old 1250GS. Recon is the same suspension unit.

OK, but for me there are some things that non-negotiable when available. I would not buy a modern BMW (or other premium brand) without electronic suspenders. I do use it. Oh, and a centre stand. Heated grips, quick shifter...

Each to their own. Centre stand and heated grips would do me

Normally I tick all the boxes, I like the extras . Had a lone 1250gs basic once , felt bloody awful.
I admit my 1200 s were fully wilbured (esa) but the new bikes are as good and better .

This seems to be the norm with GS buyers. My last two (14 GSA and 16 RS) were well optioned versions. But that was partially because all of them on the showroom floor were. If I wanted one of the bikes the choice was buy an in stock one with all the packages (at some discount) or special order the one I want which might take 4-5 months at little to no discount.

I tick all the boxes. (y) Load it up. I want the best money can buy. And Ill enjoy it. Five months of the year riding all over Europe. My 1150 was basic, but that was because they all were basic back then.

Same with the Ducati boys as well ... I jumped ship and ticked all the boxes there , well the Grand Tour already ticked its own boxes lol..
Always remember , its your money and your choice , enjoy.
