Would everyone be happier if...

oh no I could not go back to grease all over my bike and getting greasy hands trying to adjust the damm thing.......shaft drive is definatly best....

what about the best of both worlds chain at the front and shaft at the back end.... you'll never get stuck again....:thumb2

plus a second engine with a PTO

:D

I switched to shaft drive in 1990 and I've never looked back!....I would never buy a chain drive GSA!

.....besides they'd only snap after 1,000 miles. :augie

I'd suggest throwing the research money into redesigning the present shaft drive so that it's reliable.

The shaft drive on the WC GS is taken from the K series bikes, which can handle Uber horse power and torque.
Therefore it should be much more reliable when fitted to a bike with 50% less ponies.

what about...

A fully enclosed drive chain, kinda like a honda c90 but done bmw posh style and run in an oil bath, that would go forever...hmmmm.
You would also lose a bit of weight too,and gain a bit of power.
Have the front sprocket in the swingarm pivot ala 450,thus perfect chain tension, then use chinese bearings and russian chain to keep up the dealer visits in order to keep the buyer/dealer relationship up.:blast.(hereon in called DB)

Oh and dont forget to fit a cheap shyte plastic water pump impellor that falls off in 25 months from date of purchase, make the part £4.50 plus vat,but put it deep inside the engine,so you have to split the crankcases to change it,in order to keep that D/B relationship fresh.

Then fit a superb quality thermostat made by AustinRover, perfect for the keeping the cylinder temperatures excessively high in order to warp the heads on a frequent basis.thereby maintaining that all in important DB ratio.

On second thoughts why not leave it alone , keep it simple and fix the bloody final drive once and for all,fit some decent exhaust valves that dont fall off like leaves in autumn, reduce the price a fair bit,and make it a five year warranty.
There are numerous car manufacturers who give 5 or 7 year warranties with their vehicles costing much less than a std GS.
After all, if they made the bikes properly in the first place there would be little call on the warranty.

The next variant of 1200 GS had a chain drive as well as liquid cooling?

Put another cylinder on the 800GS, it already thinks it's a three cylinder with the crank throw balance thingy, making it 1200 ... and you have your 'bike :thumb

We/they could then safely discontinue the Charley & Ewan's 'Wannabe' mode of transport :JB

And twice the weight? :augie

Bin the single sided swingarm and use a conventional 'double sided' one that'll remove all the twisting forces from the FD bearings.

Or stick a chain on it (fully enclosed like my old MZ :D )

Shaft/chain?

I fekin hate oily shitty chains, love shaft drive (as long as my bike is still under warranty)
