WOW I now have a front brake

Not trying to steal this thread but I would appreciate your comments. I see on your 07-02-06 post that you have the HE-Motorradtechnik 320 Rotor how did that work out. I have been tempted to order it but haven't found anybody running it to get their input. The rotor on my 95 R100GSPD Classic looks like a BMW wave washer and a back up I bought for the carrier is just as bent. Both carriers are shot and I don't intend to stay with the 285 diameter rotors if there is an alternative out there. Stateside we have M.A.P. doing a 320mm diameter rotor but he requires a straight carrier core to mount his rotor to, I don't intend to drop over 300$ US on the BMW to get a good carrier and then have MAP do his 400$ upgrade. Thats why HE-Motorradtechnik looks so interesting.
Thanks for any help you can give.

i'm quite happy with it, and i don't think putting much more power into one disc is a good idea as the HE setup will twist the forks with a decent pull on the lever.

i have not tried the cast disc option, or a billet caliper which owners have told me is really good.

BTW the HE kit really needs a slightly longer bit of steel brake pipe to fit nicely. they really should supply one, but a local pipe specialist can make you one for a couple of quid.

Cookie's right. Metal portion of the original brake pipe is a little bit short for HE setup.

I was quite happy with HE setup and using it for nearly 8K kilometers but after a trip on really curvy roads of Datca Peninsula/Turkey, front brake began to pulse especially on low speed.

I couldn't find the cause of this failure. Didn't crash the bike and visual inpection shows no damage on the disc, may be pads are unevenly worn.

Any help will be appreciated.

Best regards.

sounds like the disc is warped. better get a dial guage on it :(

Just a mere 13 year gap in posts :-)

The front brake on my Mikeyboy special is a bit shit. And the disc is slightly warped.
I want to replace the disc so it makes sense to upgrade the breaking too.
Having spoken to Mikeyboy, I am debating whether to upgrade from 280 to 320mm disc or get a Harrison Billet Mini 6 and a new disc either 280 or 320 mm.
So what would you do ?

A-Upgrade to 320mm from the standard 280mm disc.
B-Get a Harrison Billet Mini 6 and new 280mm disc
C-as per B but 320mm disc.

Ta for anything thoughts.

Small world. Mickeyboy has my GSPD at the moment to change all the seals etc as they are now 25 years old.

I put the HE 320mm disc on the bike years ago. I retained the original caliper and fitted good pads. Small section of brake pipe needed and stainless hose as already mentioned.

I'm more than happy.

Interesting !
I’ve been told Harrison Billet aren’t that good these days so might just do the bigger disc route .
But if you retain the standard caliper, how is braking improved ?
Ta

I changed mine to the HE 320 disc and kept the same calliper. Makes a big difference.

Arkwright will be along in a mo and tell you to get Lucas sintered pads, and then Beemerboff will be along and tell you that we've all got it wrong and you should do something else.

Hope that helps. :thumby:

It's mostly down to the HE disc and the material it's made from. Bit of a semi floating design too, like the more modern Bembro for example. Oh and the good pads I used were Lucas sintered. :thumb

Thanks guys.

Looks like 320 disc is the way to go.

Tufts, where did you get the HE disc ? I was going to use Motobins.

I think I got mine from BMW Boxer Supplies, however, it's worth shopping around as you may get a better price from other places, although it looks a good price compared to Motobins, although I have just glimpsed and not taken account of tax and postage. Also have a look at Motoren Israel for their prices too.

But do get the Lucas TRW sintered pads (from a reputable shop to avoid copies) as they also make a difference. (although they do squeak when you brake really hard)

Then I’ll be along to back up Duncan’s (Arkwright’s) views.:rob

Ref BMW boxer supplies it looks like euro 30 to post but still looks a reasonable deal.

Ok, been looking at this again .

BMW Boxer Bits have this

As my bike is a 1989 I guess I need the one on the right.

But then Motobins have this

But Mikeyboy already fitted a braided hose so shouldn’t need replacing ?

Is there any difference in an HE or Siebenrock disc ?

Looks like the same thing to me. Give them a call at Motobins and ask them.

They’re really helpful.

My only complaint with the Lucas sintered pads I bought was that with them the braking power was a fair bit less than EBC organics , and less than half compared with EBC HH sintered pads - apart from that they were fine!
I bought them on Ebay, so I can only assume that I was supplied counterfeit pads, but if they were they are a convincing copy.

When my M/C needed resleeving my local guy had no problem fitting a 11 mm sleeve and piston, and this made a noticeable difference to the power without any noticeable difference in lever travel. Or cost, compared to a 12mm resleeve, or a new cylinder.

The PO had fitted a unbranded floating 320 wave disk which used the OEM centre, with ten 5 mm bolts instead of the OEM rivets and after only 250,000 Km with the soft sintered pads it has worn down to 4.5 mm and is due for replacement. But it seems they are NLA.

The HE kit is a ridiculous price for what it is, a $50 disk, a couple of adapters and a few bolts should be about a quarter of the price.

There are proper 420 grade SS 320 mm full floating ten spoke wave disks disks on Banggood for less than $60- and I will obtain one and modify it to fit the existing centre, using the existing disk as a template.

Coupled with a copy of the HE caliper bracket this could be an economical way of getting a proper floating 320mm disk, for those that balk at the price on the HE kit.

And Motorworks have these but remember both UK suppliers charge postage of around £7.50 based on 3kg.

Thanks again everyone.

A local dealer/parts shop has an account with Motorworks so are going to order me in the 320mm disc.

I’ve been going round in circles slightly with locating Lucas TRW pads.

A Google search comes up with loads of shite along with the trwaftermarket.com website which lists my pads as this :

But then they don’t appear to be available online and if I put my g/f’s location in Banbury to locate a retailer I get an obscure garage in the West Country or in London

WTF !!

I assume that these are the pads you guys are on about as I don’t know where the ‘Lucas’ part comes from as this website is just TRW.

Is there nowhere reputable to order online ? Seems a right faff. Ta.
