Wow the price of a new fully kitted GSA !

...................

In 3 years time I'll buy the bike and pay the balance of £6200 in cash.

I'm very happy with that. Cracking bike, cracking deal.

Three years is a long time, you'll be bored with it before then [1] and I doubt a three year old AT will be worth £6200 on the open market.

Andres

[1] I handed my AT test ride bike back early I was so bored with it.......... :D

Never purchased a vehicle on either finance or pcp , in the past I have always paid cash or taken out a bank loan because I like to own my vehicles and if push comes to shove I can always sell them to recoup some of my money back.

Friend of mine got into pcp deals a few years back and since then has gone from owning outright a 3 year old Seat Leon Fr to having had a new Audi A5, Q5 and now a top of the range A7 S Line Black Edition . In the process he handed over £1000's at the begining as a deposit and payed monthly payments that at the end of the pcp term he could not easily get the cash to buy the A5 outright so used it as a deposit for the Q5.

He has since effectively been leasing a vehicle , at the end of the Q5's pcp he was again faced with finding a large wad of cash to own the vehicle so used it as deposit for a new car.

As he is now about to retire at 65 he realises that he will no longer be able to afford the monthly pcp payments and when the A7 deal is over he is faced with having to hand it back as he will not be able to afford to buy it outright and then finance a car without pcp so that he actually owns an asset.

I was talikng to someone in the trade a few weeks ago and the importers/dealer networks are actively encouraging everyone to push pcp (they make more money at both ends and in the middle of the deal according to him)

For example if you want to buy a new Skoda Kodiaq you will be faced with a 5 to 7 month wait as dealers are only being allowed limited stocks, go in and offer to buy one on pcp and apparently they are available from Skoda Uk within a few working days ?

Sorry Neil, but a massive contradiction. The bank loan won’t hold a charge against the bike, but you still owe the money and not the bike.

Not entirely, if he takes a bank loan the loan is not charged against the bike. So he does own the bike to do what he wants with it.

However, a Bank Loan is still finance with interest added. So that bit doesn't make sense.

Although he owns the bike as an asset, the loan debt offsets this anyway. So still doesn't technically have anything as a financial advantage (ideal in divorce scenarios).

Agree and the charge element was mentioned in my post, but the whole finance/PCP debate is so misquoted and is no different here.

"I own my own house” is something I here every day - only true when you pay off your mortgage. The PCP type facility is an excellent option and should be looked at (in my opinion) as the cost of a hobby. Deposit is £x, payments x 24 are £Y - add the two together and that is the cost of ownership (plus insurance/service etc).

Join the golf club with a £400 annual membership, pay monthly, pay annually, it is just the cost of your hobby.

I was getting my GSA serviced today and say a new Ralley GSA in white, blue frame TFT screen full luggage every toy ticked including SOS tinted screen and it was £21500  Ok it was fully loaded but my word that's a lot is it not ? 21 grand ! Anyone bought one at that price yet ?

The concerning issue is when it’s a year old and has covered only 5,000 miles, it would be worth £12k on the private market and £10k as a trade in.

I’ve never done it but this is what makes PCP look attractive.

Personally, I’d rather buy a nearly new one outright and do the same with cars

PCP and guaranteed values can also be a perfect scenario if we hit financial recession mid term.

You always have an opt-out and hand the bike back, walk away.

If you'd paid cash you might be left with a situation where you just cant sell it at all. Its worth nothing.

Cos people are kidding themselves that they can afford a £21k GSA or high end £50k car on a pcp when maybe they couldn't in reality

We want more because we're duped into it

Not because we need it

The curse of the new shiny toy, once the wrapping is off - we get bored with it

Old money doesn't show off with shiny trinkets like new money does

Sad really isn't it

Consumerism - the 21st disease or religion

We are off our tits on it .....to a greater or lesser degree

Not going to end well

I think att and his rotivator have got a point

Growing your own good is more fulfilling than the keyless fob to a new £21k GSA on a pcp

PCP is the devil's work

Has something terrible happened to you or is glum, cheerless, miserable, downcast, look out! don't do it! O me miserum! doom monger just your normal outlook? Cheer up! ;)

£21k and absolutely feck all security for your money.................... is it any wonder they're getting stolen like hot cakes.

'I own my house' as you quote

I am an owner occupier

It is actually a more planted outlook than all the families who are gayly signing up for PCPs with the self-justification of "It must be good - everyone is doing it!"

Look around the country and see all the swish, new cars - you could be forgiven for thinking the economy was absolutely BOOMING!

I think the reality is somewhat shy of that.

I was talking about JB's outlook - not the economy or Brexit or how anyone else is spending their money (or someone else's money) or anything else you want to spend your time fretting about. You're only here once and it's a waste of energy to fritter your time away in the doldrums, finding something to be gloomy about. Who cares what someone tells you about the economy, whether it's "absolutely BOOMING" or not? Enjoy your job, your family and friends, your life, get out on your bike! :beerjug:

On the one hand we’ve benefitted from cheaper prices for BMW bikes for quite a long time in comparison with European countries. One of our brethren from Ireland is shelling out 25000 euros for a GS Rallye. The prices in Germany, home of BMW have historically been far higher than the U.K. No great surprise that the drop in the pound and the approach of Brexit is going to drive prices up.

On the other hand it’s a demand and supply thing. Don’t like the price, don’t pay it. Buy something else. The market will drive down prices over the year if sales dip.
