Santa brought me an MP3 thing. It has all the cables and gizmos, but my computer does not have a socket small enough for the wee plug on the transfer cable. USB connection.
Is there an adaptor available so I can stick it somewhere else, or am I stuffed ?

I am a computing numpty.

Well.... you cant be good at everything !!!

What sort of computer do you have? If no USB, then the easiest thing you can get is a serial port adaptor that will work but will be pretty slow.
Best bet is to get a USB PCMCIA USB card - you simply open the compter case, and plug the card into the slots that are by the "grill in the back". Like this

If the two ends look like these, then they are just different size usb connectors. If so, you want an A-B cable. PC world will have them.

Now if you dont see either on the back of your PC then you are screwed :D Go and buy yourself a USB PCI Card.

Den, sounds like Steve may have a point suggesting that it is a "Firewire" cable.

Check the instructions that came with the player to see if there is any mention of "Firewire" or "IEEE1394" which is another name for the same slot.

If this is the case you will need to install a Firewire PCI Card into your machine. Go to, http://www.directusb.co.uk scroll down the page until you see a box entitled PCI & PCMIA Cards. Click that box and on the next page scroll down to 4 Port Firewire PCI Card (plus cable). The card will cost you £12.95 with free postage.

The card is very simple to install. If you order the card and are not too confident about installing it, you may know someone who will do it for you. Alternatively, e-mail me. I will then send you my phone number so you can ring me and I will talk you through the installation.

Thank you all, but I think ive fixed it. Just got an adaptor and it transfers ok. There is a message comes up to say that im plugged into a non usb socket, but it all seems to be fast enough for me. Albums take about half a minute.
