I have a wunderlicht hugger to fit, and need to know if I need to remove the
cover on the shock (the drainpipe-looking thing)..... and if I do need to remove it, how is it attached?

Many thanks for all advice ( I know theres someone out there in this wonderful community)

To remove the shock shroud you'll see a single socket head allen bolt (5mm from memory) that clamps the top of the shroud around the shock. This will need removing first.

Beware this plastic shroud is very brittle and will almost certainly shatter in this cold weather.

I normally warm up the plastic at it's thinnest points with a hot air gun, until it becomes pliable enough to prise open and around the coil spring.

The Wunderlich hugger MAY strike the shroud during use, if not removed, at the extremes of suspension travel

I don't know if you need to remove it to fit your hugger, but if you do:

Theres a small allen bolt and captive nut at the top of the cover, which needs to be undone and then the cover can be spread apart and taken off.
If it's cold where you're working try and heat the cover a bit to make it more pliable - with a hair-dryer or fan-heater - No flames!!

Hope this helps.

Here are a couple of pictures of the bolt that holds the rear shock shroud together and how to access it.

Not sure if it will be any help to you with a Wunderlich hugger, but here's a little page I wrote up about mounting a Motorrad Concepts Hugger. Maybe it will be of some use to you. :beerjug:

OH REALLY???? I don't think so!!!

The Wunderlich hugger is the Ilmberger hugger!! For the standard hugger there is absolutely no need to remove the shock cover. Indeed you would probably want to leave the cover in place for the maximum protection for the shock.

For those who have fitted aftermarket shocks that do not have the cover, there is now an extended version of the Ilmberger hugger to provide the increased protection needed.
