Not a crash site as such but local to me and fairly interesting.....

Close to me is a bridge over the River Tees at a village called Winston.

During ww2, they used to train Spitfire pilots at RAF Middleton St George (now Teesside airport) and, for shits and giggles, they used to fly their spitfires under Winston Bridge.

In the 1980's they were making a TV series called A Piece of Cake about Spitfire pilots during the war and they wanted someone to recreate the bridge fly under.

Step forward a guy called Ray Hanna, former RAF, red arrows pilot and owner of a 1943 spitfire......

Rumour has it (not sure if true or not) that he asked for permission from the CAA several times to do it and was repeatedly turned down........so he did it anyway :)

To commemorate it (and the pilots during the war) there is a little brass spitfire on the bridge parapet.

Link to an article about a crash of a Handley Page Hampden bomber above Lacken, near Blessington, Co. Wicklow in April 1941.

4 airmen killed and they are buried in Blessington. A granite column bearing their names marks the crash site. Not accessible by bike but it's a nice hike.

Location on Google Maps

Were all the Sunderland’s built by Shorts and in NI ?

Here's one you won't be able to visit!
Underwater archaeologists found the remains of a Catalina on the bottom of Lough Erne about 6 or 7 years ago. No-one is quite sure if it was a crashed a/c but as it may contain human remains it has been designated as a protected site.
In May '45, at the end of WW2, RAF 131 OTU at Killadeas received six brand new Cats and local rumour has it that they were stripped down of engines, armaments and electrical stuff then towed out somewhere in the Lough and scuttled. Might be one of these ones?

There's a Junkers JU88 (I think) near to the Dursey Island Cable Car on the Ring of Beara, I have some pictures of the memorial somewhere, I'll try and find them.

Looking this up there seems to be a contradiction, its hard to locate the crash site

first report
On July 23, 1943, a German Junkers Ju 88 (Werknummer 430456) crashed on the Ring of Beara at Ballinacarriga Hill, near Dursey Head, West Cork

second report
In the fog the aircraft crashed on the crest of Ballinacarriga Hill?

I assume they are talking about Ballinacarriga Castle area which is a difference of about 80km (50m)

Going off the fact you mention the cable car to Dursey Island i would hazard a guess the crash was in Ballaghboy near the summit?

It was around 20 years ago that I was there. The memorial plaque says 'Near to this site' or words to that effect.

It's somewhere among these signs I think.

Ive dropped a marker at the memorial plaque location.

At least if someone rides there, they can get snacks from Murphys and take a ride on the cable car 😁

I know this is pre WW1 but near the site of the ‘new’ Stonehenge visitor centre is what was known as airmen’s cross. The memorial was moved when the road layout was changed to a roundabout.

I was there last year and parked my bike about 20 feet from that and never noticed it?
I'm going blind as well as deaf ffs lol

Although not in Ireland, here's another one close to me. An early RAF P51 Mustang, AP208, which flew into high ground in 1942 killing the pilot, a 29 year old Canadian.

These pictures are from 2009 and 2005 when there was quite a lot of wreckage still on the moor. The engine is probably buried there too, it wouldn't have been worth the effort to recover it from that location. (It was an Allison V-1710 28 litre V12, not a Merlin.) There's also another B24 Liberator, 42-100322, five miles east of this site.

Co-ordinates are N53 57 05.4 W2 35 55.0
