X challenge rebuild

Ok thanks for that, I did think the same about the bandage it's all been removed now, I will check the fibre washer on the guard it does get bloody hot it actual burns through your boot after awhile, can I ask if your running on the original radiator or have you gone down the pace route? .

I was running the original radiator and didn't have any overheating problems.
I did take the side panels and rad guard off and give the radiator a good blast with a pressure washer from the back forwards. Pay particular attention to the centre of the rad. Loads of mud in there.

Ok thanks, the rad at the moment looks pretty shagged, but il remove it and have a proper look, have you changed the oil cooler on yours? .

I have a Pace rad. I did 1000 miles in 48 hours last year in temps up to 100 deg across Utah and Nevada with no overheating issues at all. Prior to that, the normal (mud-clogged) rad would cause the fan to come on if I even looked at a green lane ...

I'm going to have to replace the rad it's pretty f####d , phoned bm today they want £240 for a new one, so I figure an extra £160 for the peace of mind Is worth it , although I'm still waiting for another couple firms to come back with a price this motorcycle adventure lark Is getting expensive :D

There's a thread on here somewhere with a recent price for the PACE rad - IIRC the rad, guard and delivery was £480 + vat.

I've run mine for years on the standard rad and guard; fan comes on regularly, and I keep having to clean the rad (avoid bending the fins with too much pressure), but it's never caused me any problems or overheated on me, so don;t worry too much if you can't find one immediately.

That's a lot of money for a radiator, thanks for the feedback like I said bm want £ 240 for the standard rad but I intend to tour So am thinking it will be worth the investment, a stupid question when I start putting everything back together what should I loctite I guess everything that doesn't come off that often  I've never taken a bike apart like this before :hide

Cheers robbo

Yes, but if ur offroading, you need to loctite just about EVERYTHING...and still carry plenty of spares.

I've had 35mm M8 (luggage rack/X-tank), fairing bolts, and subframe bolts lost on trips. Even with loctite.

Radiator, no luck so I phoned pace spoke to a guy called kamil, seemed helpfull but had not heard of the bike :confused:so the upshot is he is coming to sunny southend this afternoon to have a look at the rad and the bike !! Here's a pic of the old rad

Thanks Gfj I phoned pace yesterday spoke to a guy called kamil he is coming to me this afternoon to have a look at the rad I found that a bit odd I explained that some of the guys had brought one from pace but he still insisted he needs to see the bike and the rad,
Il keep you posted on what he says, I want 2 of them one for a mate of mine who just brought johnny boxers old xc .

Update on the radiator, the guy from pace turned up yesterday had a look at the rad measured it all up then had a look at my mates xc which is still intact, as soon as he saw the bike as fully intact he new he built them before, he gave us 2 options,
1.copy the rad and supply the same one as some of you chaps have brought from them price £ 521+ vat
2 build a bigger rad adding 45 mm to the bottom of the rad and making the fins larger, I was a little worried about that option thinking maybe I might struggle when putting it all back together ,
The price for the larger rad £ 640 + vat , I would certainly welcome any feedback any of you guys might have, :beerjug:

Seems a lot of money to me. They are good, the fan comes on little, but they will still have the same amount of crud thrown at them unless you change the mud guard setup.

When fitting mine, the plastics did need cutting, though nothing difficult.

Id be looking at what you paid for the bike, what you plan to do with it, and would you get sufficient return on it to justify that price. You could maybe try it in standard trim until you come to a conclusion.

I've been pondering the same question all day the rad was one area I didn't account for:blast as I see it now I'm off to morrocco in the spring for about a month so overheating is a problem I could do without, and I have got other plans for the bike as well at a later date , so I'm thinking as much as it pains me to shell out 600 quid, I Think I may well I could go for another bmw one £240 but would I still have the overheating probs, did you have the same size rad GFJ ?, I'm going to attempt to get the swing arm off tonite, I see some of the guys have had problems getting them off wish me luck:D

Valve adjustment...

Robbo, found this on youtube while looking for something else.

The bike in the video is an F650, but the engine is basically the same as the XC bikes.
