A recent off in Portugal has caused the end for my rear subframe.
I have the intention to weld the aluminium frame to repair it, but then it will be on my mind.
Kito has mafe a steel unit for his, so I'm tempted to do the same....
I belive TT do sell a subframe but I'd hate to think what the price would be.

Timpo,

Does the later generation of Xcountry's have a steel subframe instead of the alloy item fitted to XChallenge and Xmoto, that could be fitted instead?

Might be the simpler option.

How bad has your's gone? and where did it fail?

OK, the bike fell from high-side to the right, and the rack touched down first, baqrs next and then the footpegs, so it ended up-side-down.
The right-hand spar at the rear of the sub-frame has sheared through, as so many pics on advrider shows.
I could weld it up, but the damage has been done more so at the point of the crack, so a weld will only move the point of the next flaw further up the framework.
So, the next idea is to make or purchase a steel frame.....

Went into BMW the other day about this very thing, I fancy sticking a steel one on the back or my Xchallange because its fixable in the middle of nowhere, yes the later Xcountrys had a steel frame on them and alloy frame the alloy rear frame on the early ones this has the same part no as the Xmoto and the xchallenge rear frame so guess the steel rear frame should fit straight on. Only down side its about twice the weight, and a rough price I got was about £400..
Hope that helps Mr T

For discussion's sake, I have no steel BMW subframe at hand, but received some TT-subframes last week, so I just went to the scales:

BMW alloy rear subframe: 1,9 kg
TT steel rear subframe: 4,7 kg

So the weight is actually more than double.
On the other hand I think that that would matter for an MX-bike, but for a travelbike the extra solidity when using it as a mule would be a serious pro.

As far as fitting the steel subframe of the last (Chinese/Loncin) XCo version (p/n 46 51 7 716 439), I can confirm (having fitted a few to XChallenges), that it fits like a glove and has exactly the same dimensions and mounting points as the original alloy one. The only real difference being the welded-on passenger pegs (first thing I grind off when building up a bike with such a frame :green gri)
Since the price of this part here on the continent is almost € 500 ex VAT, I think that the price of £400 mentioned is without VAT? Else it would be a bargain.

Meaning?

XCo has a very different seat to XChallenge and Xmoto.

Up to the Loncin/Chinese versions of the XCo all 3 'Xes share the same alloy subframe though

Hope this answers your question ;)

All 3 are alloy, except yellow 2009 Country which is steel

Soft luggage and frames, will be fine with alloy frame so long as you don't overload it

Steel subframes are rare, only TT and ERik make them, or u=you could try for a BMW one at £600

Seat - get it modified and re covered or try a Rayz/Renazco/Kahedo sadlle

Plan is giant loop coyote tent on rear

Mite mske own steel one just 4 fun next winter
