Does anybody know what the OE shock length is? And anyone that can change the bottom mount on an Ohlins, I'd like to fit a 650GS shock into a X Country.

Cheers
Pete

Why?

The 650GS shock is designed for the rising rate suspension linkages of the F650GS and will have totally different characteristics (spring weight, rebound etc) to a shock designated for the Crosscountry which is fitted direct between swing arm and top mounting :nenau

"I don't know" would of saved you some typing.
I wasn't asking for a point of view just the length of the shock Ta

I can feel the love. I can really feel it.

I don't know either. Also... I don't care. Worth noting there are 2 versions of the country, both have totally different rear end setups. Depends on what year yours is or what you're trying to do with it. I second the questionable nature of your inquiry and advance the fact that Hagon are willing to build me a shock to my own requirements for £300.

Out of the Rep-DVD:
distances from eye to eye
black xcountry: 337mm, adj. down to 328.5
yellow xcountry: 328.5mm adj. 320mm
Hope you are satisfied and no need to be facetious
Nobu

If you quest for a shorter shock, Ferret has a newish Hagon unit.... well, it is in my garage at present but I'm sure it is for sale should you be looking for reducing seat height.

Cheers Nobo :D
I have an Ohlins off of the Mrs's old GS and she now has a X Country so rather than sell it I thought it would make sense to have the bottom mount changed to make it work with the XCO if the lengths are in the same ball park.
The bike is used (at the moment) for a bit of commuting and will be ridden from Alaska to TDF in the not to distant future so it doesn't matter if the rising rate isn't spot on, no lap records are looking to be broken.

Cheers

uuuum, Hagon, £300, custom build.............................. does that not ring alarm bells?

No, that's normal price. Basically I'm getting a Challenge shock to give my bike a bit more height and just getting it a bit stiffer for the extra weight, (pillion, luggage, beer, etc). It's no hassle for them so they're just charging normal price. Maybe not Ohlins quality but still far better than stock and good enough for me.
I like the idea of trying your luck with the Ohlins though but as a plan B how about selling it on ebay, buying a shock and having cash left over to spend on the other things your X-c needs? Line of least resistance. I do think sometimes people (on here and every other forum) think that everything has to be as manufacturers tell them even though the manufacturer frequently sells you a flawed machine in the first place compromised out for cost effectiveness to maximise their profits but maybe you're making things a little harder for yourself than they need to be. Also Nitron can fix you up with a shock for similar money but their springs are blue instead of red. Obviously this will make the bike handle differently.

The Gs shock will not fit the Neither Xcountry or challenge. The ends are different.

I'd ask the local undertaker if he can fit a 6ft body in to a 5ft coffin as that'll be whats reqd when it spits him off and he hits summat solid cos the shock wasn't designed for that model.
No need to change the lower mounts cos his feet will probably be missing at that point.
Will that do Micky??

Well I wouldn't send my missis out on a bike with a rear suspension unit that I've made fit just because the distances between mounting are correct, but comes from a totally different rear suspension set up type.

We're not talking megga bucks here when all is said and done :nenau

Yeah ... that'll do Luke, but then buddy boy didn't ask that :augie

Agreed.......................if people don't want to listen.................then fine:blast

Sell the Ohlins for the F650GS, bank the cash and buy the CORRECT aftermarket shock for an XCountry.....................Wilbers maybe preferable as they have donea lot of research for a Country

Yup ... agree with you there JB

As a rough calculation but probably wrong, the GS rear shock will have about half the travel of the XC and will be rock hard .... but he didn't ask that ;)

On a related note, has anyone managed to replace the bottom mount on the XCountry Sachs shock? The spherical bearing in mine has failed and while it will start to unscrew from the shock it goes tight after a few turns and I don't want to force it.
