Is it ok to run the XChallenge chain with a split link or is it imperative a rivetted link is fitted to a new chain?

Hi JB,

I've been running split links for about 8k miles now without any problems associated with the link.

Same here Johnny, no probs with a split link:thumb2

I have only once had a problem with a split link and that was not on the Xch. Providing you use a quality chain there should be no problem.

My failure occurred when I used a cheaper Iris chain (several years ago on a drz) leaving me to push the bike a couple of miles home. I know of quite a few riders that had Iris split links fail around the same time. A couple of years later a friend had to rebuild the gearbox on his drz after his iris chain let go at speed, jamming the front sprocket and bending the gear shafts. If I had know he was using one I would have warned him against it but didn't find out until the damage was done.

Using a cheap chain is a false economy - at best you will replace it and the sprockets sooner.

I had a problem with the OE DID chain fitted to my 'Berg - the circlip on the split link rubbed against the chain guide and eventually fell off. Luckily I spotted it before the sideplate fell off too.

So for that reason only, I now use a rivet link on one of my own excellent value X-ring chains.

the tip for getting a split link on tight ,is to open up the face plate by a tiny amount with a drill so it goes on easy ,then while putting pressure on the split link when putting it on ,your sure the plate is on as far as it will go ,then check that nothing is touching it when you spin the wheel , always carry a spare that you have prepared the same way ,if the face plate is to tight the split link wont seat well.
if you use o ring chain always squeeze the rubber rings in a vice for a while to flatten them a little,........... moly

Done those tricks before on Enduro bikes, but a timely reminder
