Well after speaking to Timpo, I thought I'd try a possible solution - before looking at the fine Pace Engineering radiator he has had fabricated

The problem..............baked mud

So I set about effecting a solution!

I bought some stainless mesh and some M4 allen bolts, washers and nyloc nuts at an Autojumble, a couple of weeks ago

Out with the tin-snips to cut the mesh and shape it to fit, then drill the mudguard once shaped and attach with the stainless M4 fittings -It took about 20 mins and cost about £3 for the materials

It took longer to clean the radiator, with the hose and a selection of small brushes.................all clean now

Re-fitted, I think it looks ok

Off now for a trail ride, to test it out, doubt I'll find much mud though today

Haven't tried it in mud yet (too dry) today, but now all works ok in Phase 1 testing

Temps today were 22c in full sun and no wind

Did about 100 miles of road, trail and single track - fan never came in on the trail (even wooded rocky single track) and would only come on after 2-3 mins when the bike was idling on the sidestand, at the end of the trail..................so all is working ok in dry & hot conditions

I've currently got my radiator soaking in a bucket of water to try and soften the caked mud (replacement is on order).

What i have found has made a difference, is fitting one of stephan's front fenders- the modified ktm unit.

This doesn';t have any vent slots in the back, and it has been very noticeable how little crap you actually get on the radiator. it's just a shame it's to late for the original fitted to my bike.

Guess mine isn't that bad, it cleaned up in about 30 mins of off & on cleaning, in situ

We don't have as much mud as you have (more rocks), especially on the Plian and it's more peaty, rather than the clay gloop you encounter...................so I count my blessings

Did your fan come on more regularly than mine, as I described today in Post#2:nenau

JB,

I rode mine to the shops on wednesday, and the fan was on almost constantly. My radiator didn't look dirty, but i soaked it, then sprayed it through with a hose, allowing the washing to collect in the bucket.

it was quite shocking how much mud i got out.

What doesn't help is the amount of fins that have been bent over through careless use of a pressure washer.:blast
