Just updated xp home and now it wont boot. Have tried in safe mode etc etc.
If i boot in safe mode it gets so far and then stops at one of the driver files. Powers itself off and re-boots back to the start again.
Have tried using the xp cd for repair, but only get the option to repair from the recovery console. I have tried this but when the recovery console comes up it it just hangs. Anything else i can try. I would rather keep the data i have and no i havn't done a backup tut tut.

Cheers in advance

Go for the 'reformat' option....if it still hangs after you've done that, try removing any non-necessary PCI cards like modems etc and wait until XP is installed and fully patched before physically putiing them back in the box.

If Xp still won't install, chances are your CD is fekked :(

Cheers mate. Got to the stage where you press f8 then it comes up with the screen of what part to put windows onto and it just hangs again i am now suspecting a dodgy HD could it be ?

just thought i would add. I have tried making the HD a slave on another pc. When i boot that PC it now takes ages (approx 2 mins) to load and i cant see the slave (drive that i think is fekked) at all.

Knoppix

I had the same problem, I downloaded a copy of Knoppix, allowed the
machine to boot to CD, Knoppix on the CD was the O.S. which has an easy
to use interface
C:drive was accessible much like a slave drive, backed up all my stuff to a
USB hard drive. Then formatted C:drive , reloaded O.S.
There is probably a simpler way but this way worked perfectly for me.
This is only if you want to save your data, other than that do as Fanum said. :thumb
Make sure your jumper settings are correct and the Primary and Secondary IDE connections are correct. The great thing about Knoppix is that there are no hardware changes, just boot from CD. :thumb
