xp versus win98 with my scanner !!!

Was running win98 with a 1240u Epson scanner to simply scan mainly slides and the odd photo. Recently switched to XP and cant seem to get scanner working at all ??? (Yes, i did download drivers from Epson, although maybe i have to use winzip to compress ????)
Ive spoke to Epson. 1 guy there said it should work with XP, with latest drivers. Another said it wont ????????
Admittedly, XP wasnt available when I bought the 1240u but why did the guy at Epson say it stiil should be ok ???

I had similar problems with an HP scanner, fine in 98 with HP software. There is a hell of a rigmarole to get it to work in XP, but I found the easiest way round it is to go into control panel, scanners and cameras. XP should have recognised your scanner, there is a wizard that will scan to produce a jpg. Won't allow you to use any OCR software, but if you only want pics thats no problem. HTH
