Thanks to Snooky I now have a decent laptop at a very reasonable price.

All I need now is an operating system!

So next question is, anyone have any ideas where I can get XP Home ed for not too many squids?

(I've tried loading the version that came with this desktop PC but it doesn't want to play for some reason!)

I put the disc in, it starts to whirr away merrily, then stops and nothing further happens!

have you set the BIOS of the PC to boot from CD ROM first?

does it ask you during boot up if you want to boot from CD ROM?

legal(ish) xp home here 60 quid.

Doh!

Never had to load onto a blank 'puter before!

Clive e-mailed to stick the CD in, then switch on. Bingo it's loading!

Cookie, thanks, I might still buy Windaz again (just in case there is some copyright legal stuff if use the version that came with this PC!)

there is. you shouldn't do it legally. one license/one pc, but if the other installation was activated more than 160 days ago, the new install will activate ok now ;)

Thanks Graham.

And everyone else who has helped. (I love this site, there's always someone with the answer without being a smartarse about it!):clap

Now another question!

Before I phone the supplier in the morning and make a complete arse of myself, perhaps someone could help further?

This laptop has volume controls on the side and has a DVD player/re-writer but when I try to adjust the default sound settings it tells me there is no sound system!

I put a CD in to see what would happen but low and behold it tells me it can't play it because of an absence of sound.

Am I missing something obvious?

Hopefully,

Mike.

It probably means that the audio card needs a driver that is not included on the Windows XP CD.

Try the makers website as most of the reputable manufacturers have download sections where you should be able to locate all the necessary drivers you will need, Graphics card, sound card, network/modem ETC. Laptops are always an *rse as they always use bespoke hardware which almost always needs specialised drivers that are never found on the Windows disk.

Chris.
