Y peice. Are they worth it?

Does the cat eventually wear out and need replacing/discarding anyway?

Yep, just have a nice burial and get a new kitten:D

Interestingly if you read your average car manual it states that you should not subject the cat' to sudden changes of temperature by driving through floods. How come BMW does not mention this? Or is the GS immune? How many pictures have you seen of GS' being ridden through fords, or do they all have y-pieces?

Isn't that one of the reasons for the Adventure not having a cat (or not on early ones anyway)? That and poor quality fuels in all the remote places it was supposed to go (like Slough) and the fact that the cat got so hot that when the bike was ridden through long, dry grass it caused fires. Or am I making all that up? I'm sure I heard it somewhere.

All Advs had cats as standard.

Oh well, so much for that theory. It must have been the voices in my head that told me that.... But bearing in mind the Adventure's intended use, fitting a cat seems a bit silly.

Exactly - everyone I've spoken to manages to spot this little anomaly - which somehow escaped the notice of the marketing department at BMW. Easily solved, happily, with the fitting of a Y piece...

Mike:)

When fitting a y piece, what do you do with the oxygen sensor lead, is there a plug on the y piece?

Exactly! And I'm pretty damn sure that backfiring on the over-run/closed throttle doesn't do a cat any good either!

There's a threaded hole on the front of the Y-piece (Remus, at least) - you remove the lambda sensor from the cat and screw it into the Y-piece.

Im in love with this thread. Just bought a remus Y peice from no less than one of the treasurers of MAG!!!

Without hijacking this thread, it seems its all a good idea having a y peice but is there any evidence of the best way to run a y peice to optimise its performance and economy boost??

i.e.... hotwiring the ecu with a wee cable or buying the genuine plug???

Because its ok saying "yea, a y peice is great" but surely it all depends on how its set up with your bike???

Going to sync my work for today and then go fit my new peice of shiny pipe! :D

FYI, I plan to run the standard silencer with the Y peice. Not got the cash to splash on anything better at the mo. :(

Just stick the y-piece on and do the old steptoe mod with the cst code plug and you should be fine.

For reference, I have a Carbon Can Company y-piece and an oval titanium can and I paid £220 for BOTH- that was at the NEC bikeshow mind.

It has a hole for the lambda sensor as well

Definately noticed more midrange power and boy, is it noisy. Even with the baffle in. I am used to it now.

The steptoe mod aligned with Champion EON2 plugs has virtually stopped all the popping and banking- it used to do it a lot more with the standard NGK's. The motor also runs a lot sweeter as well

Definately worth the money

So is £180 a good price, or can they be got cheaper elsewhere? And how easy are they to fit?

I plan to get one on these when funds allow.

Ebay item: 130141712100 £93.99, £5.75 P&P.

They are made by Motad so I have been informed by the vendor.
So bugger:ymca paying over £100 for a second hand one!

Moo

Nah, save your money and just whip the end can off, leave the Cat on and stick the Steptoe Mod© on and your laughing.:thumb2

If you do a google search for "David Sherlock"... they are doing the Remus Y piece for £150 and there service is great. I also bought the Remus Rev titanium end can from them. £380 for the lot with next day postage :thumb

Got it all fitted with a K&N and the cc plug jumper lead. Runs a dream and sounds great:D

I alway's thought that my 1150 ran better with the standerd cat than it did with the Y fitted :nenau

Just throwing my two dinar's worth

IIRC a CAT needs to heat up to optimum temperature to be effective. Short journeys don't make it.

Again, IIRC, a CAT puts out nitrates that do not deplete the ozone layer, but do cause acid rain.

Or did I dream that???
