I understand this has been done to death, but i need too be sure.
Im fitting a "Y" piece to my 1150gs and keeping the standard can.
Asked Steptoe for some info and he has helped me out no end.
But there is this niggle in my head.
So if i fit the y piece and the standard can, WITH the cat code trick with link wire, what can i expect!!
What i mean is, yes it will sound a bit louder, and i may even get more MPG, but what are the downfalls...if any.
Also who else has done this mod, and what else is needed to be done to make sure its as kind to the bike as possible.
See told you i measure twice, cut once

If you have a link that could shed even more light, then let me in on it

The downfall, if you can call it that, is that it will occasionally backfire on the overrun.

I also remember reading somewhere on here about you have to take a fuse out, turn key on but dont start up!!!!!!!!!
I have looked but buggered if i can find it.
Any info on that.
Thanks for the replys, but if it only pops now and then i could live with that.

Y piece

I did exactly the same as you are planning took off the cat and replaced it with Y piece left the standard can on , I did the usual cat code change , even tried it without plug, with plug also the steptoe mod, also the take fuse 5 out (think it was fuse 5) to alter engine mapping. The backfire was hellish when you come off the throttle after riding hard other problem I found was it melted the clip on my BMW ali pannier frame. Think a poor seal at downpipe to Y piece can cause this but never had time to try it yet, as I took Y piece off and went back to standard cat for trip to europe.
If you try it let me know how you get on :thumb2
Cause I need to put Y piece back on just to stop SWMBO complaining about a £90 y piece laying in the shed gathering dust :bow

You don't need to do that.

Try your bike without it first, then try the link and see if it makes a difference. Lots of bikes it makes no difference whatsoever.

Don't worry about resetting the motronic, you haven't cut the battery supply. Resetting the motronic makes no difference to running with a Y peice or not.
It's just to show the TPS where full throttle is after the motronic memory has been cleared by cutting the power supply.

I've done this and the only downside (?) is that it occasionally scares the cr*p out of people when it backfires on the over-run. Otherwise, it goes like the proverbial poo off a highly polished garden implement!!! :thumb

Fek Fek Fek:blast .....no wonder me Bike's so slow....I never showed it the whip length after I fitted the new Battery last year....:D

Thats why it's not such a big thing that everyone makes out - It'll "learn" after a couple of days use anyway .
