Guys,

Quick questions - R1150GSA 2004

I know that some folks advise removing the cat and replacing it with a Y piece, when travelling in parts of the world where fuel octane may be lower than ideal, as it can help the engine deal with the poor fuel.

Will removing the Cat and substituting it with a Y piece cause problems when the MOT test comes 'round?

Also, will fitting the Y piece require any fiddling with the engine management?

Finally - and I'm not looking for extra performance - to aid with the aforementioned fuel quality issues, would an aftermarket can be a good idea?

cats

mot ok with Y piece, my tester thought that it was standard, remus titanium can is good, so is standard exhaust too and quiter.

My 2003GSA went through the MoT quite happily twice with a Y-piece fitted, along with the standard can which meant it wasn't any noisier at 6:30am when I went off to work.

I'd recommend holding on to the cat. I gave up on the Y-piece because the Y-piece killed the low down torque for me. Commuting in and out of London I rarely got out of 3rd gear and the cat-plus-standard zorst just worked better.

ive got a y-piece and remus can on my bike. not had any issues with engine management. make sure the clamps are done up properly.

regards to mot so long as the baffle is in the exhaust and it is marked for road use every thing is fine.

my sv 650 is a year older than my gs with no cat and even in standard trim is loud enough.

for me i found the y-piece has improved fuel economy.......i never got 200miles from a tank when the cat was fitted. i do get 200+ now with the y-piece. i guess to notice differences in performance would require back to back rigorous testing etc......im not into that. i now get 200+ miles to a tank so im happy.

:)

I took the cat off my bike and kept the standard can so still nice and quiet
I felt it had a bit more mid range with the Y piece than with the cat
down side is the dreaded backfire even if you play with cat plug

Hi

I am running my 1150 GSA with the cat cut out and a stubby plus Steptoes Cat code plug mod and a Air intake temp mod. No backfiring on overun at all. On acceleration it has a bit of a bark and is a bit noisier in town but is just great on the open road. Consumption - Who knows all I know is that it is cheaper to run than my 4.0l Ford
:)

Y piece went on mine 3-4 days ago along with a 2nd hand Stainless Simmi can which has made it a lot noisier and deeper exhaust note.............. which coming from a series of race canned sports bikes i like ......just need to get a dent knocked out of my titanium Akrapovic and see if i can fit that instead :augie

Feels better in the midrange and revving quicker to get to the top end. Will see how much a tank gets me in the next week or so to compare to. Not had any backfire problems yet as the fuelling seems to be spot on :)

mines the same,it hasnt made any noticable difference to petrol consumption either,, i tried the stubby route too but the y piece suits mine better

must say it sounds nice too. especially when i pull off from stop in second. probably not good for it but damn it's got a lovely sound without the cat

Hi, I have a remus y-piece and a akrapovic can on my bike. Also without any issues with engine management for the very first time I put it on.

The baffle is out and the 1150 GS sounds and runs great.

I also agree with the fuel economy issue. More than 350Km with the tank and the bike breads like a crazy horse!!

Bets regards from Spain :Motomartin

After a couple of weeks havent noticed the fuel consumption drop at all but i do tend to ride the bike fairly near the top of the rev range a lot anyway.

The pipe is feckin noisy and the missus hated it while pillion but i'll work on that bit :augie

Top speed seems to be about 120-125 as opposed to the previous 115-120 ish but just so much quicker getting to it due to the more free revving but still no backfires :)
