Help.......
Wondered why the bike was backfiring more than usual had a look for air leaks and noticed my Remus Y-Piece has a crack in it. Has anyone had this happen to them and what did they do about it? It is nearly 3 years old now so the guarantee is way out.
Can you weld stainless steel?? Its about the only thing gaffa tape won't work on. :D

Oh yea ..it took me ages to get the camera angle right so you couldn't see my messy garage and take the p*ss.:D :D

Thanks for any suggestions.

Sounds like a great recipe for gout Para......watch yerself!!!

(I'm hobbling around like a one legged hobbly thing at a hopping contest at the moment  )

*jealous*

;)

Thanks richie
I have taken the Y-piece off ready to be welded. No problems either which was a surprise.
But found cracks on the Genesis can also, looks like they have been there a while. Going to try to get that welded also. Does anyone know if this end is Stainless steel (I know the sleeve and other end is titanium).

Paragon...No it hasn't had a hard time on since new 27k ago, But fitted by Blue Bell Crew. :( IMO it should last longer than this.

Luckily I found someone that makes stainless steel exhausts for cars. He had a look said he could fix it. Five minutes later job done.......The cost Nowt, Nuthin , Nada, Zilch

Top Bloke gave him some beer money and went on my way.

Everything back together now and tightened up as per Paragons instructions.
Thanks all

Bloody Remus

Mine's cracked too. Gone almost all the way round just where it joins from y-piece into the can. I'll have to find a welder.. Now, having put the original back on, it fits much straighter and easier than the Remus ever did...Might just keep the original can, and put the y-piece on when it's done. Seems to be the can which causes the problem...

From what other threads say it looks like its an alignment issue that causes stress on the Y-piece and the pipe that goes into the end can (by the way has that crackes too?).

When I put it all back together after getting mine fixed, I didn't tighten anything up untill I had everything in place. I didnt tighten one bolt then move to the next , I did a bit on one then the next then the next to let the system settle to its own angles.

Its not a big job to get it welded took 5 mins and was free.(he must have liked my rugged good looks)

Y or Y not

NO cracks on the end can. Can't possibly believe that a delicate wee lad like me would have managed to put that much pressure on it....I know a man here who's a specialist stainless welder (he does the piping for the perfume factories), so he'll patch it up...

Does that mean the exhaust gasses will smell of Channel No5??:D :D :D

Mine Too

My Remus can has splits in it too and so does a mates. I have just had mine welded (this week)and a bracket fixed to the clamp to take some of the strain off the end plate. I haven't fitted it yet so only time will tell. Paid a tenner for this at a local engineering works.

Exhaust cracks...pipes and cans.

Thoroughly agree with all the slacken everything off before final alignment and tighten up; with some reservations!

The vibrations that you can feel running through the bike from time to time ( the slight to moderate one that all GS's generate) have to end some where and on the frame this will usually be where the engine mounts to the frame. So in this case we have a vibration frequency from the engine and another from the frame (road and transmission vibes) both meeting up at fairly hefty mounting points. These are strong enough to absorb the now colliding vibration frequencies.

Unfortunately in the case of the exhaust (after market stuff) the resonance in the exhaust note and the vibrations running through the front pipes, 'Y' piece and end can have very little paths through which to loose their vibrations.

The end can is kind of mounted flexibly, but that rear mount is quite hard and offers little by way of movement so vibrations have to be absorbed by the can. Results can be seen and are obvious by the cracking radiating out from the tail pipe (end cap) to the can edge.

Similarly with the 'Y' piece a whole host of vibrations are colliding at the centre of the Y and radiating around the middle.

The whole thing is magnified if the engine is slightly rough running or ridden very forcefully continually.

The catalytic convertor body would have been ideal for absorbing some or most of the vibrations as it has a very wide surface area over which to spread and loose the vibrations.

Now before anyone says 'piss off its all bollocks' go out and WITH GREAT CARE hold or feel the rear can/silencer with the engine running(leather/heat proof gloves would be good at this stage).

Feel around the 'Y' piece and you will see what I'm getting at.

The OE silencer is made of much sturdier stuff than the light weight Scremus and others and therfore, with its great weight and denser build, can absorb most of the harmful vibes that are causing the cracking problems some of you guys and girls are experiencing:)

You need to make sure that the rear can hanger bracket is flexible enough to allow it to absorb alot of the vibes meeting here.

CCM had a similar problem with their DRZ based bikes and with some of the older Rotax models, in a round about way I helped them sort that one out.

Please make sure that the exhuast is fitted by some one competent and then you should be ok. Scremus make good stuff as do many other manufacturers, I think these problem ones are probably either down to some Dealers poor fitting and other peoples hasty quick fits:)

I'll get me coat now then, got to polish me Aprilias x2, underseat exhausts, stainless pipes..modern...ish engine design etc etc.;)

That looks like TIG welding to me. Whatever, it is really nice and uniform...excellent stuff at least some one hasn't just stuffed a MIG welder onto the crack and used ordinary mild steel wire.

Quite correct. Tig welded then polished.
