Does fitting a Ypiece significantly affect fuel consumption for better or worse

Depends how you use the throttle....

I found my MPG went down from about 46 to 43. But I don't think this was necessarily the Y piece making it more thirsty. Instead, it was because I liked the noise it now makes under acceleration so started to ride differently.

YMMV (literally :P )

Yep have to agree..

Give any biker a noisy exhaust and no matter how young/old the rider is he/she will wring the bikes neck more, so down goes fuel economy. Its very often this noise 'thing' that lulls people into thinking that their bike is actually quicker, its just that they screw it more......usually.jerkit

Y piece and fuel consumption

Reviving a very old thread, I know.

Having fitted a Y piece, my GS1150's fuel consumption has rocketed!

(from 200 miles per tank to 150-160). Not conscious that I am riding the bike so differently.

Have I missed something obvious?

My last refill was after the warning light went on at 340 km (I make that 211 miles). Add another 20 km before refilling and I refilled with 19.65 litres.

The warning light regualrly comes on between 300 and 340 kms (186 to 211 miles). Motorway cruising and fast 2nd and 3rd gear twisty bits. That said, when I ran a standard set up (its a 2003 R1150GS), I once refilled at 400 km (248 miles) but I haven't seen that since fitting the Y piece AND Remus titanium end can, with baffle removed.

Mine is also an '03 GS1150...but a real drinker compared to yours!

At its best the fuel light came on at 180 and it would run to 200/210 miles - but it's way below that now.:(

It's just been serviced...so any suggestions of causes welcomed!:nenau

And it's not a heavy hand because I get pretty good life out of my rear tyre.:D

And as I am setting off on a 6k mile trip in a few weeks I really need to sort this soon!

Why not just refit the CAT???

I can usually count on doing about 10 miles to every litre of fuel which is around 45mpg, but with a Y piece and remus I was getting less and it was too noisy.

If I was really convinved that would solve it, I would. I guess I am not yet sure that's the case!

Y?

I fitted a y piece to my 1150 ('cos it was cheap) I don't really think that it goes any quicker but fuel consumption has gone up a bit I'm sure must try
putting the cat back and see'

You did say since fitting the y-piece that consumption had increased so put the cat back on and try it... you will soon find out if its the case or not. Its an easy job to try.

It doesn't matter rely You will steel get 260-280M to a full tank:D
I tryed this last night and today I went Brighton to Glasgow and back in 18h and I full up the tank at 260-280M 100mh 5-6k rpm:D and I am happy:thumb

I am a bit puzzled by your comment:

Are you referring to a GSA or a GS size tank?
What have you done that tells you removing/replacing the cat makes no difference?

:blast Sorry I am talking but GSA
No cat just Y pice and Remus revolution:thumb
If you remove the cat you fiul consuming is increasing:D
With the cat on I get 310M to a full tank.

I've been reading posts on this and other forums about changing the exhaust on the gs... ok the 1100. for the past 10 years.. and the more i read the less i want to do it.

I'd rather spend all that money on useful things. like petrol and bacon butties.

y piece etc

Anyone know if the clamps on the cat the same size as on the Y piece (in case I do need to replace the cat - I don't have its original clamps)?
Thanks
Simon

clamps

They fit on the same pipes in the same place so they must fit.
dave ("y" piece) GS.
