~~ Y Piece ~~

Thanks all.

Civil - let pretend I hadn't posted before and here's my new post below...

----------------------------------------

Civil,

Picture looks good - will be nice to see the finished article. Tell us a little more so we can tell you if it is likely to meet our requirements:
(a) What will it be made of compared to the competition - will it be lighter?
(b) any chance of curing the odd backfire problem people often get with Y pieces
(c) I assume you'll get the finished one dynod and fuel checked to make sure it doesn't run rish or lean - everyone will be keen to know the results
(d) how do you go about designing it - are all Y-pieces the same design or are there some unique points?
(e) what kind of guarantee will you give for any manufacturing defects do you think ? 2 years
(f) will you be able to ramp up production to meet demand. Will Nippy Norman be a reseller?
and finally...
(g) whats' your target price so we can tell you if we might buy one.

Good luck in the final R&D!

Cheers,

Mark

Better? :)

Civil - are you open to customer input on design features?!

How about making it about 5 to 10 mil longer at the downpipe end than 'currently available' retail models?

I'm convinced that this is (one of) the cause of my backfiring woes - my current y-piece doesn't fit far enough over the downpipes to create a sealed joint. There is a small gap at the end of the tightening 'slit' where air gets in (causing backfires), and soot gets out (causing the soot blasts on the downpipes by the slit).

I've even included a little diagram to explain my problem!!

I don't know if this applies to everyones y-piece - but it certainly does to mine which is bollox considering how much these crappy bits of european tubing cost us!

And while I'm about it - will you use the same diameter of tubing as the original Cat - where it joins the end can? Mine doesn't - it's thinner (narrower? has a smaller circumference...) - meaning that it is very difficult to get a good seal at the can without spending hours carefully crafting a shim out of a coke can - which never really works anyway!!

Sorry - I kind of went into rant mode there a bit - but in all seriousness - if the downpipes / tightening slit issue's aren't a feature on your model - I will buy one.

Sgt Pluck

Sellin Foot Flaps !

A} What will it be Made of . {A} All stainless.
B} Will it be lighter . {B} Than the Original, Yes , Than the
wunderlich , Yes , Than the Remus , No , {not so far}
C} Any chance of curing Backfire. {C} In honesty i dont know
yet. But Sgt Plucks points about "the tightnen slit " are
not an issue. These will fit properly.
D} Will it be dynod & Fuel Checked. {D} Not sure what you mean
by fuel checked. But Dynod , , In time Yes.
E} What kind of guarantee. {E}In honesty i havent thought about it
Any manufacturing defects will be sorted , Not sure about a
time frame.
F} Will you be able to ramp up production. {F}You would simply
not believe the facilities ,that i have access to.
There will never be a supply issue , for these or CaJa Sahel.
G} Will Nippy norman be your re-seller.{G} I only wish i could get some one with a bigger financial clout , involved. The Developement costs , of the CaJa Sahel alone were unreal ,
I have had to pay for the CaJa Sahel alone 90 Hrs factory time.
H} Whats your target price. {H} The answer i dont know !.In sayin that Quantity is the Key , If i could get a quantity order for anything i make , that includes CaJa Sahel , the price simply Plummets. The Production manager wants to sell in 10s . ANY TAKERS. i am serious when i say this.

So Now then Mark , what say ye !
On your initial thread i had thought "Plonker" and no way was i goin to answer the query, but this one , well it just soundedbetter.
PS : I do make a rather good Foot Flap ,

fancy a pair !

Bin Ridin - don't speak ill of the dead - the world needs more characters like John Z Delorean, may he rest in peace (he died this week).

Civil - I'm definitely interested in a Y - if there's a good saving over a new Remus - we need you to give us a price!

Will you do a package deal (save X%) if I buy footflaps at the same time?

Andysdad

I honestly didn't know that major aftermarket companies were selling Y-pieces, but it sounds like I couldn't have afforded them anyway.

We have a local guy in Adelaide that has a name for fabricating retro exhaust cans for restorations and the like, he'll also do complete systems. His business name is Redline Exhaust.

He took AU$250 of my cash to fabricate a Y-piece from plain old carbon steel exhaust pipe and while it isn't shiny it is well made and it has the necessary brackets for the side stand etc. He made it to fit a left hand side Termignoni carbon fibre can from a wrecked Ducati Monster and it gives a bit more power and a lot less weight at the price of extra noise (its pretty loud).

To make it out of SS he said 'about double'.

It backfires so I'm happy I'm not the only one this happens to, although I don't think it backfires due to exhaust leaks, all the joints are tight, no exposed slots.

Hi Mate,

I'm looking for a y-piece at the moment, as I'm in the middle of giving my 1150GS a bit of a freshening. would love to ry yours out. put me down for one - when can you send it?????

Mike.

A Few more pics .

Of the fitted Y piece.
Yes Capt . I have em , but am still tryin em out .

I would have the same questions and would add:

backpressure in the exhaust system is often designed in to increase midrange power, which I believe to be the case in the GS. In fact, Yamaha have a valve in their collector on some models (Fazer 1000 perhaps) which closes for midrange power and opens at high revs for more horsepower.

I would be interested in the before/after dyno runs, as I've seen several of these exhaust mods yield less overall power. Too easy to assume that less backpressure=more power.
