I am sure that on this site there used to be a set of instrucrions on how to swap a cat for a y-piece on a GS1150..but I can't find it - I have y-piece, I have a day off work, I have a nearly empty fuel tank...so I'm ready to go, but I can't find the simple step by step instructions I know were here!

Any one no where they are?

cheers

No. But how can I put this without sounding mean...

Hell with it. If you need instructions to do that job, mebbe better to leave it to someone else to do? It's a 30 min, undoing and doing up type job, unless something goes seriously wrong, and if it does, you'll be off-piste with the instructions approach.

Fuel tank isn't going to come into play, but the way.

Fuel tank isn't going to come into play, but the way.

It will if his fingers aren't nimble enough to disconnect the lambda sensor plug (and not to do so risks damaging the cable at the sensor end).

Carl, Bigtwin is right, if it you don't know what you are doing leave it to someone who does or it may end in :tears

I am able to carry out routine maintanence on a GS, I have previously fitted a y-piece (or al least tried - it was out of true and would not match up with downpipes and silencer. I used a set of instructions from this site at that time. The fuel tank is should be moved to diconnect the sensor (otherwise wire can twist/break) - since I have rather large hands - (changingthe headlight bulb is bloody difficult with my hands) the tank has to be displaced (I seem to remember I fitted QD connectors on the fuel lines last time I did this).

I can very easliy lookm at the bike and work out what needs undoing/moving BUT there is always an easy(ier) way to do a job - so why not call on the knowledge of others who have done the job already; there is no advantage in taking the hard route - if someone has found any pitfalls why should I not benefit from thier knowledge. I have not needed dealer help when replacing piston rings on an MZ, rebuilding brake calipers on an R65, fitting engine bards to the GS......

Carl,

The only problem I encountered was that the Lambda sensor wouldn't unscrew with an open ended spanner...so rather than risk damaging it....,

I soaked it over night with easing oil, then undid the cable at the other end (at the front of the Tank) so that I could slip a ring spanner over it and with a bit of care, the sensor finally unscrewed....

If the pipes don't marry up, something must be bent...or you've got a cheapo 'y' piece...not manufactured to tolerance...:nenau

Otherwise, as I think you already know, it's a piece of Pish....:D

The only real pitfall is the possibility of lambda sensor cable damage. Apart from that, it is simply a case of unbolting everything. That said, it is quite likely that the clamp holding the silencer to the cat will be so badly corroded that it will be a bugger to remove and you will need a replacement. As it is an integral part of the heat shield it can be expensive to replace unless you bodge it (I used a regular exhaust clamp for the Y-piece-to-silencer connection and then a large jubilee clamp to hold the shield back on).

Thanks to Coolcarbon and GlynnJ. I get the fasteners soaked in penetratinmg oil tomorrow and hopefully take it all apert on Thursday. New battery going on at same time, orginal lasted just over 5 years but optimate now starting to show it is not holding charge.

cheers
