Y Pieces

Y-power-pipe-for-R-100---80-GS-Paralver

Thats a proper Y piece. Much better gas flowing than the Keihan item. It is pricey though.

It is, but what the heck;)
I sent my Keihan Y pipe back. I could not get it to fit "right" and caused a lot of vibrations. Keihan were most accommodating and gave a full refund:thumb2

I have just ordered the item in the link above from Mat Beekers with an "if you are not happy" buyback deal. Cant be bad.
He assures me it does what is claimed... bit more power, bit more noise.
He said I should change the non-linked headers though:(

I will report in due course.

Keihan are good folks to deal with. Weren't you tempted to try their new design Y piece?

I've got an Early aluminium RS airbox fitted. It flows a lot more air than the later box. I'm running 170 main jets as well. The bikes smooth and very quick. I can pull into the redline in top gear so could do with a taller 6th gear. It gets a bit hairy at top end speeds on a PD though I'm not sure I've got the bottle for it anymore.

BSM "Y"

Got it fitted now and now that the one piece rocker shaft mounts are shimmed;), its running nice in the garage - insurance probs:(

Everything lined up really easy. The alloy tube spacers on the header/Y joint are not required, but the one to the silencer is - standard can.

I will raise the needles back to the standard notch and see how it feels.
They say it just replaces the collector and has a German "ABE" so should work without modifications.
They say it gives a "bit" more power and a "bit" more noise:D

I got them from a guy on the German 2V GS forum - €120 +p&p or you can get them from Motoren Israel for €199 + p&p.
I can give you an email to send to him to request that when he does another batch, you want a set... or I can ask if you like.

Release all head bolts. Remove rocker shafts from the posts, keeping everything in ORDER - What came from where. Don't loose any needle rollers.
Remove the shims from the rocker arms. Put that shaft and rocker arm in the one-piece unit and measure the gap with feelers... From the factory, the shafts are fitted with 2x .30mm shims.
One of mine was .90mm and it needs .05mm clearance, +/- .02mm.
So, that's one shim of .50 and one of .35mm. Done
If you re-check after installing, you should be at TDC or there abouts with the tappet adjuster backed right off.

Shims come in .20/.25/.30/.35 and .50

Repeat on 'tothers. Torque it down and adjust tappets.

Its not hard:comfort

That airhead is obscenely clean

The Y piece looks like a real quality piece of kit - looking forward to hearing what she runs like with it fitted.

John, the BIG question.
So have the one piece rocker bit made the top end quieter? Are they worth the cash? If so why are they better than a correctly set up std set?
I'm fed up setting the valves every five mins and anything that helps I'll sign up for!!!!

Not been out for a run yet as I have an argument with my insurer and they cancelled it!

Just running it up in the garage, it seems good and quiet. I shimmed them on the tighter side - +/-.002.
Putting an ear to the valve cover, it all seems quiet.

From what I have heard, its the fact that the rocker shaft is shimmed within a mounting that is a constant size as opposed to the slightly wafty way the standard posts are "pinched" to give the correct clearance.
How many heating/cooling cycles does it take to change that clearance:nenau

Does it help keep the tappet adjustment right? Only time will tell.
Soon as I get a decent run on it, I will let you know:thumb2

If you want, you could ask Mat Beekers at BMWBoxerSupplies, or Motoren Israel why they are supposed to be good.

I took it on a little run to the European Ural Rally near Linz, 2800km round trip and all I can say it that it runs really good:bounce1

Everything back to standard setting and it pulls like a train all the way through... didn't go above 6 and a half grand:D
No holes in the delivery. Full throttle roll-on from any rpm is clean.

Its as loud as the Keihan and there is some popping on overrun.
I did get a "universal" DBKiller but its a Pisa Merde. Will now try and make my own.

All in all, very happy with it:thumb2:thumb2

Hi

If it pops and bangs on the over-run and there are no air leaks, you could try and richen up the air mixture screws a touch. Might just be a bit lean on closed throttle.

My bike has a Y pipe fitted. No problems whatsoever!!!! It sounds good and not at all loud (even passed the legendary TUV!). When I heard a std GS with the collector box fitted I was amazed how quiet it was. I have no idea who makes the Y pipe so I should get round to posting some pictures of it and see if anyone can tell me where it came from. Previous owner said the guy who makes them sells them on flea bay de but I've never seem them. I had to re seal the silencer joint t'other day and it even seems to fit nicely. I have no idea what jets are fitted or the needle position.
I also have a seiben rock kit so I don't know if that makes the difference.
