.....and completed my IronButt 1000:D

Left home at 6am Wednesday morning, arrived back some 20 hours later with a little over 1000 miles showing on the GPS.

The original idea was to achieve the mileage without using any motorways at all. In the event, weather and traffic got the better of me so I hopped onto the M5 for the trip home, so had a total Motorway milage of a little under 200 miles.

Overall, considering the time of year the weather was fairly kind to me with just odd, quire heavy showers last at the most an hour. Biggest fright I had was as I left home we had just had quite a heavy shower in Carmarthen…..on freezing roads, I totally lost the back-end as I exited our drive. Nearly went back to bed at that point…..

First part of trip was then taken very gently and took me out to Fishguard then right round the Welsh coast to St Asaph, meaning that at the end of the first two hours I was running about 20 minutes behind schedule. However once the daylight arrived I picked up the pace and by the Shrewsbury was back on target in spite of a break just before Oswestry. Then dropped down through Ludlow, then across through the Cotswolds to Oxford, Reading, Winchester, Plymouth and on the Penzance by which time I had logged a little over 700 miles.

I had originally intended to turn right at Lands End but wasn’t sure if anything would be open to obtain a dated and timed receipt. So Fueled up in Panzance at Safeway and McChukups and headed for home. In view of delays getting through the rush hour traffic along the South Coast (this seemed to start at about 3.30!) My intended run back along the North Corwall/Devon coast was abandoned in favour of making up time on M5/4. To add a few miles lost from taking the scenic route I left the M49 in favour of fuelling up at Aust . that gave me just enough milage on the GPS to finish at Carmarthen, otherwise the plan was to finish at Haverfordwest…

I have attached a mapsource file of the route for anyone interested or mad enough to want to have a go.

Guess it’s got to be the Bum Burner 1500 Gold next!………….but not till the weather is warmer…..how about mid-summers day?

The Mapsource File

Sorry it won't allow me to post the file ....says it's too big. But here is a pic of my GPS at completion:beerjug:

In anyone wants the GPS route drop me a pm and I'll email it to you.

I am impressed (honestly) but why? Training for the National Rally or some other?

An e-mail of the mapsource track and / or route would be great

Well done again.

Just because.........

But seriously, the Iron Butt Association run challenges and rides mainly in the USA, but you can complete any of the challenges anywhere subject to certain regs and rules.... Have a look at there web site at: http://www.ironbutt.com/about/default.cfm.

Often wondered just how tough it would be, came close on a couple of my recent mad trips across europe, so decided it time to go for it....:D
I'll drop you an email of the route when I home this evening.:beerjug:

Yer mad in the heid!

1000 miles on a bike trip is impressive enough any time. But in January?? In Britain?? Ice butt more like. Congratulations....

Thanks guys,

just got to fill in the paperwork, post off to the US of A and await my nice certificate. Easy really.

I must admit that I didn't find the Heated waistcoat all that hot...may well be that the weather was just sooooo cold that I didn't feel it. I aslo found that it seemed to switch itself off occasionally.

Well done that Man.

Good on yer Dennis, didn't notice any Posts of your intentions, bet you need a new pair of those Kinky Tight Pants :D . Notice your max speed was only 74 odd, is that a rule?? or your choice.

Bad weather
There's a fellow who is an avid Motor bike rider. Actually he's a motorcycle fanatic. He has not missed a weekend of motorcycle riding in years. Every Saturday and Sunday morning he gets up very early and goes meets his buddies for a nice long ride. On this one morning, he gets up early, dresses quietly, gets his riding gear out of the closet, and goes out to the garage to prepare to leave. While out there it started raining a torrential downpour. There was snow mixed with the rain and the wind is blowing at 30 mph. He comes back into the house and turns the TV to the Weather Channel. From there he finds it's going to be bad weather all day long. So he puts his bike back into the garage and comes back inside. He quietly undresses and slips back into bed where he cuddles up to his wife's back, and whispers, "The weather out there is terrible."

To which she replies, ......

"Yeah, can you believe my stupid husband is out riding his bike again today?"

Well Alison might think it's funny.
