Just thought I would right up a little report on a ride I did a couple of weeks ago…
I was getting fed up not using the KTM as would normally have had a Pyrenees trip planned, but due to work (or lack of) this is on the back burner for this year.
I have made a few trips down west to Cornwall over the past year to catch up with friends, so decide to repeat the trip, but using the KTM.
Normally I would use the 1200 ADV, which would mean for a short camping trip that weight would not be a problem, so take everything including the kitchen sink!
However, on the KTM, that’s a different matter.
I also used this trip to try some new bits of kit, so fitted the Giant Loop Coyote bag and Rogue roll bag.
Loaded up the gear, small tent, utralite mat, jungle bag, fleece liner, Trangia, a few utensils and a change of clothes.
It might seem a little odd taking the jungle bag and the fleece liner, but I couldn’t fit any of my other bags into the roll bag and figured that it might be a little cold using just the jungle bag. I was right, the first night was OK as some cloud cover, but the next night was cold, so just slipped the jungle bag into the fleece liner and was warm enough then.
The Coyote held the tent, cooker, utensils, fuel and clothes.
The ride down was planned to hug the coast then through Dartmoor (which was raining, fog and as miserable as sin!), which took about 6.5 hours, but only needed to stop for fuel once, halfway, at Exeter. Not too bad for 250 miles.
Doing that sort of mileage or rather number of hours in the saddle was fine, the KTM took it well and didn’t really notice the Coyote on the back.
I was worried about loading the bike up as I have not fitted any external frames or supports, but do have the Rally Raid top and bottom fuel tank supports and uprated rear spring.
I camped just outside of Mullion and spent the next day riding round the tiny lanes around Cadgwith and Coverack before heading over towards St Michaels Mount, Lands End and the coast road between St Just and Zennor. A great days riding ☺
I would normally only go away with at least one mate, but this time there was no-one up for it, so went alone. Not a problem when riding, but once camped it did hit home that you have no-one to talk to. Soon got over that by engrossing myself with a bit camp cooking. First night I cooked up a great corned beef hash and on the second, really pushed the boat out with a Paella. All made from scratch and washed down with a few beers.
The upshot is, if you are thinking of heading off on a KTM, the Coyote and Rogue bag make a great luggage system. As you can see on the photo I also use a small Kreiga bag fitted to a tank mount.
Stove wise, I own a few different ones, Coleman Sportster, various gas cookers, Wild Stove wood gas cooker and an MSR lookylikey, but I found the Trangia to be a great option since it is fully self contained, has all of its pots and kettle in the relatively small bag. Obviously you need to carry fuel as well, but only needed a small bottle.
The other purchase was a ‘no leg’ anywhere chair, which despite looking dubious was actually very comfortable, supporting your back and allowing you to sit on the ground. Since it is only a bit of nylon and foam was very light too.
Hoping to get out again soon and ditching the tent to try the DD Hammock ☺
Best Regards

Does the 690 have a decent rear subframe for taking luggage? Also what keeps the Giant loop bag off the exhaust?

I wouldn't think of becoming a chef by the way:D

No, the 690 doesn't have any rear subframe as such. The rear of the bike is made up of the petrol tank. Early reports were that the tank mounts weren't strong enough and breaking under heavy use. Rally Raid make replacement mounts that are stronger as well as a lower mount that can be removed on the trail, which the original KTM one can't.
The bike is designed to take a passenger, so I can't believe that the original mountings should be that weak, but thought I would play it safe.
When fitting the GL bag I have tried to keep it forward and away from the exhaust, but it also comes with a spacer/heat shield that prevents the bag touching the exhaust. The original KTM silencer gets extremely hot, but the Akro replacement is a lot cooler, so not so much of an issue.

Will keep practicing the cooking though:D
