yet another GS stolen

sorry to hear that.

what is the weakness on these bike that makes them easy to steal?

not chained
keyless ignition

Unbelievable! Gutted for you.

I am seriously reconsidering buying a new one this year if they are prime targets.

I often wonder whether if both wheels were prevented from rotating (i.e. disc locks) this would prevent the bike being quickly taken. But I guess they may use pipe freeze or similar to embrittle the pin enough to clout it off with a sledge hammer. I guess they aren't too worried about damaging the discs.

A 7.62mm is the only thing that they are good for, the thieving feckers!!!

There does seem to be a disproportionate amount of these bikes being nicked, I know they are a best-seller and that's going to affect the 'availability' of bikes on offer to ne'er-do-wells but come on! Community action required... anyone want to start a vigilante bike-thief realignment team, London focussed to begin with, then Edinburgh... :-/

Am really sorry to hear of your loss, hope the insurance etc. is sorted out with the minimum of fuss (I'm eternally hopefully and optimistic me!...), don't let it put you off the GSs, they are as you know great bikes - just too attractive to theiving scum too I'm afraid!

Andy

I am sorry for your loss

I am in a similar situation and i don't want to dishearten you but insurance are not playing fair.

But to be fair, on this forum we are only going to hear about GS's. Plus people don't come on the forum and say "My bike wasn't nicked".
Would be interesting to see stats for motorbike thefts to gauge whether more GS's are nicked than any other bike?

I think there is no harm in naming insurance companies, even before a claim is settled. It would help us all to know if paying a bit more at renewal equals a better claims experience. After all, it is not until you make a claim that you know if your particular company is any good...

Hope you get sorted, I echo the comments above....
I wouldn't have an expensive bike if I had to leave it outside my home at night,,, if I did it would be tracked, alarmed, immobiliser, alarm disc lock, data tagged with a massive chain around through the wheel and over the seat and covered.
You can only do so much I'm afraid as if they want it they will have it.

Who is the underwriter you are dealing with?

As so far the cops have already given me the full crime number and the underwriters have been in touch and we have worked through the details of the claim. Aviva (my underwriters) and just waiting for confirmation of the bike being a TE spec, before being handed over to the engineer to value the claim/bike. Interestingly Aviva wanted to know how the bike was bought, IE dealer (BMW) or private (Autotrader) and their settlement figures are different for both.

But of course we are not at the crunch where we talk money yet

My insurance is with Just motorbike insurance - Someone was asking about it.

I have been parking bikes outside my house for 5 years. SV650s/GSXR600(k7)/GSXR1000(K9) and now the GS. never had issues before. But I guess it was only a matter of time before I joined the statistics.

Unfortunately while people buy 2nd hand parts or items from dubious places there will always be theft. Only the other day I was offered a 55 inch 4k curved TV form a back of a "van" for £250. I politely declined. Most bikes will be stripped for parts. Does datatag or equivalent really work.

Gutted for your loss.

The OP lives in the bike nicking capital of the world. You should be fine in Dorset.:thumb

I completely agree.:thumb

Ron of London, BMW's preferred insurer Allianz requires the insured machine to be safely locked up in a garage overnight (at least that's what they specified when I insured my XR a year or so ago). Presumably your insurance company does not have this proviso. Even if I switched to a less fussy insurer I would probably still garage the thing at night time. I am in Kingston, not a hotspot for motorcycle thefts (it's all burglaries around here), but I would not leave my bike out any more after the hours of darkness. Anyway, hope you are mobile and happy again soon.
