Yet another HID conversion

Well, it had to happen I guess but why is it that we always want more, more, more :nenau

First off BTBR waved his magic wand over my bike and all of a sudden I could see (and I mean REALLY see) where I was going courtesy of a set of FF50's and Micro DE's. Perfect I thought, I'd never need more light than this little set up :rolleyes:

Then THE ROVER advertised some PIAA bulbs on this site and I thought, what the hell, lets see what all the fuss is about over these bulbs and bunged them in the FF50s. And what an improvement that was :D Perfect I thought, I'd never need more light than this little set up :rolleyes:

Then THE ROVER (he's got a lot to answer for ;) ) advertised the unused half of his Bosch HID set up...................

I've just got in from the garage having fitted it and my god it is sooooooo bright, I really can't wait for it to get dark and go out for a ride :D

TBH even if it were no brighter I reckon that the HID combined with the Micro DE 'running lights' will make a big contribution to helping the bike stand out in traffic and has to be worth doing for that reason alone.

Fitting could not be easier. The bracket supplied fits below Migsels light bar and the wires go through the back of the lamp cover (you need to make a 25mm hole here). All connections were packed with waterproofing electrical grease and I cable-tied the ballast to it's bracket just to ensure it could not shift.

The only thing that went wrong was down to one of those bizare coincidenses that frequently seem to happen :mmmm
When I put the HID bulb in the dipped light I swaped the bulb that had been in there with the main beam bulb as it was a '50% brighter' Philips bulb. I did a dry run with the HID connected and neither dip or main beam worked, the canbus warning that a bulb was out :(
After some thought I wondered if the polarity on the HID feed might be an issue so swapped over the connections (the two spade connectors that go into the H7 bulb connector). Fired the bike up and the HID worked :) but still no main beam.
Put the original bulb back in and I had a main beam again, seems the bulb had blown between removing it from the dip and putting it in main :eek

Hopefully this exposure shows the different colour temperatures of the various bulb types; DEs have standard halogen bulbs as does the bikes main beam. The FF50's have PIAA Extreme Whites.

Really interested in doing this conversion after getting some foglights, does converting the low beam to HID's effect the beam pattern, only ask because we have an annual light test here in Geramny and don't want to keep swapping it back each time.:)
 
I've still got a spare HID assembly from HIDS4U suitable for the 12GS. It's unused and unfitted and comes with a predrilled cover.

Probably best somebody else answers that directly as I've yet to set mine up properly (a bottle of Rioja got in the way of going out when it was dark last night :o ).

However, it literaly would take less than 5 miutes to swap back to the standard bulb if that was an issue for testing :thumb2

The beam pattern is controlled by the reflector and lens so are unaffected by the conversion to HID.

To convert back for the annual MOT test is 5 mins if they don;t care about the ballast being fitted but not used or 10 minutes otherwise. Budget £3.50 for a spare lamp holder cover as you have to drill a 22mm hole in the back of your existing one.
