Apologies if this has been covered before. I have the factory fitted racking on my GSA but no panniers. Do I need to purchase genuine BMW panniers or are there cheap and cheerful copies available from China or somewhere? I'm only going to use them 6weeks of the year. If not I might just look at soft luggage for holiday trips.

As far as I am aware only the Genuine BMW Ali panniers will fit the genuine BMW GSA pannier rails, they do come up for sale used on here and on e-bay quite regularly about £400 will snag you a pair of panniers,if you find you don't use them as much as planned you will get the same amount for them if offered for sale on here or e-bay, if you buy used you will of course need to get the locks matched to your ign key (3 locks per pannier) your local friendly dealer may be do this for you for a small fee if you don't know how.

I had a set of ARD cases on my Tenere. Built well although very simple in design to the BMW ones and they weigh a tonne.
I have the full set of BMW ones with inner bags for my GSA and these really are well constructed and very light for their size. The mounting design is excellent as are the locks, hinges, welds and aesthetics.
As said above - the resale value should you choose or need to sell on will be good, but more so the overall engineering and weight combined with their looks should sway you to invest.

The proper ones that fit the original frames are good, just slide on & lock to bike, best to match locks to your ignition key, not too hard a job for anyone with a bit of mechanical knowledge.

Voila - problem solved and I forgot about the convenience of having 1 key for the bike and three boxes - funny what you get used to!!

owning a GS is all about expensive bling, not cheap Chinese tat, you are new so there is time, but you may need help if you don't soon start to part with large wads of cash for touratat or wonderlick trinkets
I think the bmw cases are made in China.
