Yet another pannier question

Hello folks,

Having booked my CBT, one of the next questions is panniers (decision maker on whether or not it is practical to join the dark side).

I'm a site visiting desk jockey in the construction industry and need both suit and site safety gear to hand.

Although I should be able to plan whether I'm arthur or martha each day, I should be able to attend site whilst already out etc.

Current advise is for me to start on a F650 and take it from there, so can anyone advise which type / brand I should go for?

The smart meeting bag is 400 x 180 x 300 and I would also need to store safety helmet with bike helmet and rigger boots with the bike boots, suit jacket and in winter great coat etc.

And yes writing this initially simple question, I am thinking it will be a case of only going equipped for one scenario.

Bike with standing, construction safety gear is pretty bulky and worse messy gear.. as a geologist I was nearly always able to fill the boot of a car..lol. but did use my bike on the odd occasion.

But if your only visiting and not carrying any really bulky gear like sample pots/tripods/levels/etc.. then I recon you will probably be able to get most of your gear into two reasonable sized aluminium panniers and a bag across the passanger seat.
Given the need to keep clean and dirt gear seperate I would probably suggest you look at Touratech, Hepco Becker or CajaShell etc for your aluminium cases. The plastic cases are probably not going to be quiet large enough for bulky gear like boots and hard hat and are often side ways openning which makes then not too convenient for larger items like boots etc.

In addition I would look at an ortlieb rackpack water proof bag.. to go across the seat and keep your clean gear in whilst your on site in your site gear.

I must declare a vested interest here as I sell these (see logo below), but so do others such as Les at Travel-dri as well as high street shops. But these rackpacks are waterproof when properly closed; they come in various sizes and are very rugged. The top openning and simple closing means they are easy to load/unload, so you can just slide your bag straight in. Also if the ousite gets a bit muddy, then just wipe clean before taking your neat gear out.

In the interests of honesty and HeinGerrick do a water proof holdall too, not sure on its size though and its durability. Assuming your work bag dimensions are in mm's.. then i would say you are looking at around the 49ltr ortlieb or even possibley the 89ltr.. which is pretty big.

I was always able to park my bike on the site somewhere and ensure I didnt have security worries, if you are not.. then you can get packsafes that are wire meshes that envelope the bag and can be padlocked to the bike to deter idiots.
