Yet another R1250GS triple black engine corrosion thread - not covered on approved warranty because it was there when sold

I can't follow your reasoning: Isn't that exactly what would happen? The dealer would reduce the amount of a trade in value on the basis of condition? Or am I missing something? I've never seen a used bike in a BMW dealer with damage and a sign saying, 'Sold as seen'.
Think about it.

Used condition, in this case a 4 year old bike, normal wear, inc corrosion as this seems to be a regular issue on BMW’s. Trade in price and subsequent resale price reflect the wear & if present corrosion.

If the dealer had to replace all the parts that showed wear &/or corrosion before it could be sold, then either he is going to make a huge loss or have to sell the bike for more than a new one. The post above by MotoRevive explains it better than I did.

The dealerships have to finance the change of colour scheme of the showrooms one way or another🤔
They are never going to be on the losing end of the deal😉

BMW Statement on approved used motorcycle :

BMW MOTORRAD PREMIUM SELECTION APPROVED USED MOTORCYCLES

Every BMW Motorrad Approved Used motorcycle listed as part of the ‘BMW Motorrad Premium Selection’ undergoes a rigorous technical quality check.

They clearly are not "rigorous checks" if they continue to sell second hand bikes with such corrosion.
A bit of flaking paint is hardly a technical issue.

Otherwise you'd have to condem every vehicle on our roads.

Have a look under your car. It probably looks worse than your bike. You just can't see it.

But would you prefer it failed the MOT because the paint isn't like it was on the day it left the factory ?

Corrosion is normal. It's natural. Just as we all get older, wrinkled and our joints ache and creak. It's the same for metals and paints. Old father time is cruel.

It really is this simple...

If you want a new bike in new condition, you stump up the extra £10,000 and buy one.

Or go through the long and laborious task of tracking down a mint condition, low mileage bike which has pampered more than ridden. They do exist. But very hard to find.

Personally I'd prefer the £10,000 in my pocket. And just spend £10 on a tin of small tin of paint and enjoy an afternoon touching up any small issues before they get any worse.

Then spend that £10k on beer, ferries, petrol and great memories.

👍

This happened on my 2018 R1200R. I think they pretty much all do it, it is a shame but it was pretty easy to rectify. I bought some cylinder black paint and touched in the areas after sanding off the corroded bits. You only noticed if you got up close and the corrosion never came back. Just so you have something to fall back on if the mothership doesn't sort you out. 👍

If you’re unhappy OP
Just sell it
Plenty more out there
A used bike/car is a used vehicle
I bought an Approved Used Honda car a few years ago
I inspected it before collection and a few points were rectified
After collection and I got it home I noticed the passenger side mirror cover was scratched and I had missed it 🙈
Complain ?
No?
I bought a new mirror casing from Honda which was colour coded to the vehicle and fitted it myself
Shit happens - my fault for not rechecking at collection time

You say at post 1 you prob wouldn’t have noticed it had you not read about others.

I’d go back to that position.

Ride it , enjoy it, if you don’t feel the dealer has been worthy of your money, go elsewhere next time.

I wouldn’t personally spend any more time chasing something that didn’t bother you too much, I think a bit of corrosion on a used bike is not worth getting ones BP up.

Come summer farkle with a bit of paint if necessary.

Got my engine replaced by BMW, 1250 GS TROPHY, 12,000 miles replaced about 2 months prior to warranty expiry, black engine again, corrosion around the barrel and head on both sides

Could the last four posts have possibly brought some sense of sanity to this thread? I have doubts but lets see.
Since I'm the one with the bike in question you needn't be concerned, I've decided that I shall live with it as a minor issue and not start a fight that my heart isn't in (which was my original position). But for me it was still worth asking about and very useful to hear others' views.

Sounds like a very different situation, it hasn't appeared during my ownership it was already there when bought.

I bought my gsa from Dobles, Coulsden, Sarf Lundun, about 18 months ago. Never thought much about much until I overheard a conversation with my mate, who had bought a new gs 1250, and during his service(at Brighton Motorrad) they noticed engine corrosion (black paint etc).
I asked them to look at mine when in for a service and I had the same issue. My bike has 1962 miles(2023 plate) at time of purchase from the non-BMW shop but always serviced etc by BMW Brighton. TCALSS... I got a new engine, new Karden tube, New rear diff and they replaced drive-shaft at same time, all under warranty. Furthermore, immediately after fitting etc, I had the associated parts all ceramic coated.

I would be arguing like fuck with BMW, not necessarily the dealer you first went to.... IMO.. Good luck..(y)

Thanks for the input. I believe a 2023 plate bought 18 months ago (so in 2024, so only a year or so old) with such low mileage would still be under the original manufacturer 3-year warranty, which is transferable. So not really a comparable scenario I don't think.

Sounds like the best course of action to me. It would have been better had the dealer pointed the corrosion out, but on the other hand you didn't spot it either. At the end of the day it doesn't impact on how the bike rides and as others have said you could always effect an insitu repair either yourself or by a professional. There's also the fact that the factory warranty and used one have different T&Cs. It might be worth writing to the dealer principle, as they may offer you something as a goodwill gesture.

I think that is what i would do, too.
I`d rather have an otherwise bike in good shape exept for the minor issue - that you have admitted was not even readily noticeable unless under close scrutiny, than risk the alternative which would involve a BMW workshop `technician` performing a major intervention on your engine swapping parts around from two engines `to make one good one` (sometimes they don`t replace the whole engine just the cases). God knows what state it`d be in after one of those clowns have worked on it.

I’ve had my van on a ramp today and this thread made me take a deeper look, i can confirm with 120k on the clock it actually looks better than his engine paint, zero corrosion and no flaking paint.

You don’t need to look far if you want a proper minta, pampered yes I doubt there’s another in the UK like this, it’s done a massive 650 miles since it was registered in 2023, ceramic coated to protect that lovely black engine paint and full ppf to protect that triple black paintwork.

The op needs to sell that scrapper and buy mine

Really?
You think that’s mint? There’s a bit of dirt at the 7 o’clock position on the front tyre!

If the underside of your van is painted that probably helps its condition 😉

650 miles!? You need to ride it! 🤣 But yeah she is a beaut, the Remus can is 👌

Why haven’t you been riding it then?

By the way, it’s a lovely looking thing!
