My usually impeccable Mid 2009 Unibody Macbook has been really slow since I installed Yosemite, not surprising really as it's approaching 6 years old. I did the usually things - Repair disc permissions, reset pram etc. I did some digging online and it appears that ideally Yosemite needs 4gb of RAM to run smoothly. Checked mine and it's been struggling on with it's original 2gb installed at the factory.
Went on Fleabay and bought 2x banks of 2gb RAM (£17 delivered ;)) and have just installed it ........ Jaysus Christ what a difference ...... It's like a new machine!!

So, the moral of the story is, if you've got an older Mac and it's feeling a little sluggish these days, have a look at how much RAM you have, you might be surprised how easy it is to bring it right up to scratch!!
 
I shoved 16gb of ram in my 2012 macbook pro last year, but didn't really notice any great difference, and recently it has slowed down a fair bit. My 500gb HD is almost full so not sure if thats the cause? I'll have a go at repairing disc permission and see if that helps.

If you went to 16GB you probably already had enough before you upgraded, although, you can never have enough RAM eh!
I would suggest that feeing up some HD space would be invaluable!

My Macbook pro was similarly having issues. A 2010 model that has 4GB RAM. I have done everything mentioned and had some wise advice from members here, all of which I followed but still didn't cure all the issues. I went to the genius bar thing at the local apple store, where they did a load more diagnostic stuff, as I had done all the normal stuff mentioned here and they found there was a software issue which was causing the RAM to be under a lot of load in the background as it was trying to sort itself out.

They had to wipe it and I had to re-install and it was back on form. But the guy did say that Yosemite takes up 2GB of your RAM just to operate so consider upgrading to 8GB which I have just priced up at £66. I don't know if that is about right or not.

However, upon re-installing different bits I uploaded 'Rapport' security software for online banking, recommended by the main Banks, and it started to misbehave again!

I e-mailed Rapport and they admitted that it had been a known issue and that an updated version was now out to resolve this problem. In the meantime I had uninstalled it completely and the Macbook was working almost back to normal again. So just in case anyone else has Rapport on their Macs perhaps consider deleting it completely and then decide if you want to install the updated version.

That's a good shout about Rapport, every time I log in it asks me if I want to download it, I never have!

Being a mid 2009 Macbook (just before they started calling them Pro) mine will only accommodate up to 4GB. It has just transformed it though!
 
That rapport stuff is rubbish, seen it panic macs at work.

Always best to get as much ram as your system will support, and try and keep 20% of the disk free as well.

Top advice.

I had to ditch Rapport. I had the same slow down problem. It's pants.
 
My mid 2012 MacBook Pro max's out at 8Gb RAM. Even if 16 will work it could well be slower than the correct pair of 4Gb cards. ,
It's slowed with Yosemite so needs more RAM. I might also fit a flash drive and move the old HDD to the optical drive bay.
