....is what the service manager said.

I took my 1200GS for its 24K service today and there is oil coming from between the engine and gearbox. I had had 'the clutch/g box' seal replaced under warranty (it failed <6k), the symptoms that time were oil leaking from the clutch cylinder. This time the clutch cylinder is dry but there is engine oil on the bottom of the engine.

I did a search and found the following really useful thread
http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=178431&highlight=gear+oil+leak

This thread shows a bike split and when it is split, there was no sign of a leak, I guess the seal between the clutch 'plate' and the engine. If this is where the seal is what special tools are needed to replace it?

I have spent time spannering on aircraft and some really crap cars that i have owned in the past so I reckon I may be able to change the seals myself. I have a few more questions for the collective:
  1. which is the best manual that clearly describes this job
  2. what special tools are needed
  3. how do you support the bike when it is split
  4. If the clutch is contaminated, where is the best place to get a replacement
  5. are there any other seals that could be causing a leak of engine oil in this area

All comments are welcome.

cheers

Is the oil misting engine oil or gearbox oil thats leaking out ?

just an idea but is it worth trying a seals additive in the oil if it is engine oil thats leaking, i have used it on cars when they have had leaking crank seals and the job has just been to much for the customer to warrant on an old car .

Sometimes a crank seal will leak because it gets a little bit of debris trapped under the lip of the seal and a seals re-juevenator additive flushes it a way and also softens the hardened rubber seal.

You could remove the starter and spray in loads of brake cleaner to wash out the bell housing and just monitor it after that and see if it leaks again.

What have you got to lose, £7 bottle of seals additive and some brake cleaner and a bit of time.... or carry on and split the bike in half, if i am correct they also do additives for gearbox oils....thats Wynns or Forte who supply them.

I think its worth a try :thumb2

please do not use a seal additive, they work by making the seals swell, it solves the problem for a while but leaves the seals in a worse state. Then you will need to change it.
