Got BT broadband, on a Mac, wireless....

I can't watch even the shortest video without it buffering and re-loading every few seconds :(

It was suggested I needed to download the latest version of flashplayer, which I've done, and it made no difference...

Spoke to BY about it in the past and they said their end is fine....not that I believe them at the moment....

Is this down to my broadband? It's beginning to piss me off somewhat ;)

As BT is your provider, use their speed tester here. It will arm you with a bit more information such as your max line speed etc, which may help getting BT to sort the problem if there is one.

We moved 100 yards up the lane to a new barn and our speed went from 6.5Mb/s down to 2.5Mb/s (served from one pole down). After much complaining and 18 months later, they finally agreed to send out an Openreach engineer. Within five minutes he identified that the new line had been wired incorrectly and with the wrong faceplate (by BT no less). He could see 7.5Mb/s on his equipment. Five more minutes work and a couple of days later our max line speed was back to 6.5Mb/s.

Thanks for the link Dansin :)

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.

Download Speed
686 Kbps

0 Kbps 1000 Kbps
Max Achievable Speed

Download speedachieved during the test was - 686 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 200-1000 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :960 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 750 Kbps

Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.
Does this mean its still crap ?

your line speed is a bit slow, but should be fast enough to view you-tube, i'd have thought.

might need to lower the res on the you-tube site?

Have you tried connecting the Mac directly to the router with a cable and running the test? It may be your wireless signal is the problem rather than your ISP broadband connection. I used to have the same problem until I moved the wireless router to a better spot.

The one I've been trying is all ready at the lowest res (360p)

I'll have to dig out an ethernet cable and give it a try :thumb

Bryn,

I had exactly the same problem with BT. I called their helpline and asked them to sort it out as I was paying for 'up to 10mb' download speeds. They sent an engineer out (after several of the initivitable calls to India - helpful but ultimately useless) who replaced the line into the house and got be back at 6mb speeds. I told them I wasn't paying for the 2 weeks of sh*t download speeds to which they agreed.

Cheers

Your IP profile (750Kbps) sets the max download speed for the line. The test checks the line from your router back to the local exchange (I think), so connecting via a cable still won't give you any more than 750Kbps. Unless you're really, really far from the exchange, that is crap.

Try disconnecting all other equipment (dsl filters, phones, sky boxes etc.) from the line, run the test again and see what it tells you. If other equipment is causing the problem then you can install a BT I-plate which will help. Leave your router connected and switched on as it can take a few days for your IP profile to change.

Or complain to BT and get an Openreach engineer out to sort it.

Load the porn vid, press the pause button, the arrow button on the bottom LHS (left hand side).

After this step, press the button again to pause, this will show two parallel bars and wait, you will see the bar on the bottom start to expand from left to right,

Once the bar is fully loaded in pink, then press the play button :P

Think another call to BT after the bank hol is in order :)

I'll give that a go before I make a call :thumb

Better than me, according to this I'm shite but I have no problems

The only time I notice a problem is viewing video's- strange and annoying

Sounds like a similar problem to the one we had a few years back with editing video on hard drives. In theory the drives were fast enough but makers quoted a BURST figure which could not be sustained over time. It could be that you are getting fast bursts - enough to load the average web page fast - but the speed is not maintained continuously as required for watching video.

This could be too many people sharing your line so that the video starts OK but when a neighbour calls up a new page, for a few seconds, your line slows down. This would not notice for normal web browsing or downloading files but would when streaming video.

Thanks again for the input chaps :thumb I'll give BT another ring later in the week ;)

its where you live....

My Mac is not that old so I'd assume I'd got enough of most things :)
