Your views on luggage options for touring please

We use the standard alu panniers and top case with a pacsafe.

I also gave a baglux tank bag

I use a Givi V47N topbox with the Givi bag inside. Buying the topbox, bag and backrest from Italy was cheaper than buying the topbox alone in the U.K. There's enough space for a chain, spare gloves etc. between the bag and the sides of the 'box. I bought the plastic Givi mounting plate as it came with reinforcement plates and has a higher load rating than the aluminium one - it looks crap though.

The chain (10mm x 1.5m) is light and long enough to protect the bike from casual thieves and it's also used to fasten our helmets to the bike. I place them on the seats and chain through the chinbars to the grabrails. I also have a cable lock which can be threaded through the sleeves of our jackets to fasten them to chain.

I would suggest you need to think about how you plan to use the bike and your need for luggage comes from that.

If you want to be able to walk away from the bike for any period of time and leave it secure; you need hard luggage or pac safe items - leaving you to carry anything loose like tank bags.

If you intend to be on the bike most of the day, or at least have it within eyesight and then unload when you get to a destination - soft luggage becomes an option.

For a two week trip - two up I've used Varios plus top box and tank bag without any space problem. By adding two pac safe helmet bags the bike is pretty secure to wander off and explore towns and cities you're passing through. All you've got to carry is your jacket and tank bag.
(The Varios are pretty heavy so best to plan to leave them on the bike rather than lug them into accommodation unless you staying somewhere for a few days)

If I'm using any soft luggage I tend to only put in items that I'm prepared to have stolen and can replace easily.
NB. If someone wants it they'll have it whatever security you're using; so I'd never leave anything really valuable on the bike - but after passport, money, cards and camera theres not much else to worry about.

I have recently got the Givi 52l which is really good just to have the ease of putting two helmets in without any faff. But doing that means you can't load it with much else.
PS.I have a spare alloy bracket for the 52L if interested - brand new boxed and unopened.

Yes, i mentioned in my op that for this tour, webintend to leave luggage on the bikes so was verging towards a hard top box to complement the panniers. Although the pacsafe items are interesting. I have seen the kappa version of the 52l box for an excellent price. Again, from Italy I believe.

Do you have a link for the pacsafe helmet bags?

Also, i'm interested in the alloy plate if it's for a GS (rather than gsa). Will hopefully get round to subscribing later today so that i can send a pm.

I bought mine years ago so I'd just google pac safe helmet bag uk and you'll see options from different suppliers.
They also make lots of other really good travel security items but bear in mind that they all weigh more than you might expect.
The rack is for a GS - I'll find it and get the details for you.

I chose Holan Nomada Pro II panniers and top box for my 2016 GSA http://holan.pl/en/. There were a number of reasons for that. First I wanted the overall pannier width to be minimised or at least narrower than the standard BMW boxes which IMHO are just too wide for traffic filtering. Holan do 3 sizes and I chose the 38L side panniers which for me are a good compromise between width and capacity. Second I wanted the RH pannier to have the cut out for the exhaust rather than sit completely outside the exhaust as most non BMW panniers seem to do, again to reduce width. Holan were the only manufacturer to do this I could find. And third Holan offer a range of different finishes for their boxes

Overall I'm very pleased with the Holan products although their customer service left a lot to be desired. Basically dont trust their delivery times and dont expect them to communicate with you when they are late

Bumot panniers offer the same features and are readily available from AdventureBikeShop.

Yes you're right. I just checked my comparison sheet from when I bought the luggage and Bumot did tick all the same boxes, only that on a like for like basis they were about £60 more expensive overall than the Holan at the time which is why I went for Holan
