Zero Fuel == Empty ?

Has anyone definitively worked-out whether "0" miles on the miles-remaining readout means "you are "basically empty and will stop very soon", or whether there is a moderate reserve beyond that?

I wonder because I ran it down to "2" recently, filled up (I don't have a drilled tank, but I did remove the rubber sleeve which eases fuelling greatly) and I put a little more than 21.5 litres in.

By that point I had done about 230 miles on the tankful, so I am doing a bit better than my "1 litre == 10 miles" rule.

But: I do still wonder how much remains in there. Any ideas?

in my experience... no, it doesn't...

I rode mine down to 0km remaining... rode a further +/- 10km and still only managed to get 18.7 liters in at the pump...

so for mine at least, Xkm remaining = Xkm to reserve...

YMMV... :beerjug:

drilled tank ?

Excuse my ignorance what is a drilled tank & did you have to cut the rubber bung out or will it pull out?

Regards Martin

According to the manual, you've got 1.5 L more than you should of in, so there couldn't be much more left.
Considering BMW were critisized for the tank capacity, you'd have thought they'd have quoted 21.5 L anyway.
My guage seems quite accurate, it drops to half at about 120 miles, runs to the reserve miles left at 200, and I usually fill up at 235, with 10 or so miles left on the clock. I reckon you could probably run to about 250 miles at brisk touring speeds.

I ran mine until empty and got 22 litres in, filled within a few mm of the top of the rubber neck. My guage reads "0" with 10km remaining, which suits me fine.

I could go 10 km past the 0. I've gotten about 440 km on a tank, highway riding and was able to squeeze in 22 litres of fuel. All I've done is remove the rubber thingy, but did not drill the filler neck.

Well according to my dealer the 1200GSA next Spring has 34l tank. That will make your seat ache. :)

Best to date on low speed pottering about is 288 mile range (460 km). When the gauge reads '0' there's ~14 miles left. Plastic bit removed, fuel filled drilled. If I stick the bike on centre stand and fill from empty it takes 23.1 litres.

I ran mine down to 0miles.... didn't want to find out how far beyond 0 miles it could have gone - so I quickly found a juicing station :D

My findings on this are bsed on 2 tankfulls run down to Zero miles to go + 2mile to get to the petrol station.
Tank 1 total mileage 199.6 and took 19.46L to fill up.
Tank 2 total mileage 204.1 and took 19.50L to fill up.
Rubber tube removed to aid fill up.

The summary is that to the official 20L capacity at Zero miles to go i have 0.5L left which means i have about 5-7 miles left on my fast RBB-05.

was out and about on the bike today,
display said 1 mile till empty, then 0 niles and i still rode another 4 miles to a filling station...i managed to get 19.6 litres in without "topping up" (you know? squeezing the trigger... waiting a second-squeezing the trigger..waiting a second etc. etc.)

I a little bit confused ! You guys in England use liters (metric) and then use miles for distance. Am I missing something ?

Litres don't change for volume measurement anywhere in the world AFAIK. Gallons however can be Imperial or US. Their gallon being surprisingly smaller than ours and is something to do with a gallon of wine.

Am I missing something

No, the benefits of a bastardised system.

Strange how one gets used to it now though.

Nautically too, distance in Nautical miles and depths in metres.

Heights in feet??
