Hi All,

I have a BMW Trail Guard suit and on the jacket zip, the zipper part has popped off the main zip run and lost :( Can anyone recommend a repairer???

Cheers

Most shoe repairers will do zips.
Look for an independent shop rather than chain stores like Timpsons.

Not in the South, but these guys have a good reputation for repairs http://www.lancashiresportsrepairs.co.uk/

'Official' repairers to BMW and Hein Gerike.

They will do mail order.

Search the forums for 'zip repairs'.

I can highly recommend Lancashire Sports Repairs. They repaired a crash damaged textile/Goretex jacket for me a few years ago. More recently the YKK 'spiral' Zip on my current textile jacket (A Hein Gerike Master Jacket) fell apart, they replace the zip with an identical one for £40, you can't tell it's been done, first class job.

Zip repair

I have had several repairs and alterations carried out at Hill4leather, very reasonable price and excellent workmanship .

Like a couple of the other replies, I've had good results with Lancashire Sports Repairs. My original Rukka suit is with them at the minute for repair to a torn pocket and reproofing. They've done zips and Velcro as well in the past. Always got a quality job done. Cheers

Nine Lives in Farnborough may be able to help. They mostly do leather gear. It's a good few years since I dealt with them. I hope they're still active.

He did a job for me a few weeks ago, so is still active. Last year he put a Rukka suit back together which was in a poor state due to road rash, looks as good as new now.

Another vote for Hill4leather - not so sure that Nine Lives are still there anymore and I've used Hill for years now

+1 ...... for Kate at Hideout.

However, I have managed a DIY fix for this problem in the past, when SWMBO managed to break the zip runner in two. We went to our local market haberdashery stall guy with the wife's FT jacket (old but treasured) - he managed to find a match for the zip size & style of tooth closure. Sold us the shortest zip he had - £2.50 if I remember rightly. We cut the zip & removed the runner. Then, at the very top of the right zip run (right for ladies, left for men) I had to find a way to work the runner onto the zip. Sometimes there is a staple, sometimes these are oversewn into the jacket - in the end we had to sacrifice the very top tooth of the zip, rather than take the jacket apart & wriggled the runner onto the zip run. took the runner down & connected up the zip. It was all a bit stiff initially, so we used some graphite as lubricant, which soon eased things. Then we over-sewed the missing tooth area at the top, to stop the runner de-railing, which was hidden behind a weather flap & the neck fastening anyway.

Worked a treat, the jacket is still going strong years later. We did the same with a set of HG ladies leather bottoms too, when both zips failed in quick succession - slightly different technique though. Ok, it's a bit of a bodge, & inappropriate if the jacket is nearly new, but an economic repair if the cost of a full zip replacement cannot be justified. Obviously there are safety implications, so the strength of the finished job is vital.

If its just the toggle that pulls the zip, go to Bahnstormer at Alton. They replaced the one that fell off my old streetguard suit for free from spares they keep for clothing repairs. Failing that, why not ask them where to get clothing fixed ?
