Happy xmas one an all. I'm thinking about buying a zumo 220 but ned to know it will do an essential for me - otherwise i don't see it being significantly better than my iphone.
Can i download routes that others have prepared/created?
Can i also create a route on mapsource (or is it base camp now?) and download to the 220?
thanks

See Below this is a reply i got from Garmin when asking which of their units accept routes from a PC, doesn't mention the 220, but I'm sure somebody will be along soon who has one.

Hope this helps.

Andrew

Dear Andrew Harrison,

Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

I am happy to help please find below the devices that have the feature to take routes created from MapSource or basecamp and then sent over to the device. If the device has LMT , LM , LT or T on the end of the model numbers below will also be compatible. I am afraid that the device listed below are the only ones that are compatible with routes being sent over.

Zumo 550

If there is anything else I can help you with then please let me know.

Hi andrew, bit strange as the blurb which comes with the 220 states that you can create and download (I found out after I posted the thread). This was enough for me to buy one so I'll find out soon enough!

220 came with a mapsource disc wen i got mine bout 3 years ago and u can do the prep bit then load it onto the satnav. its loaded on my computer but i dont use it so if i was to get another garmin I would get a cheaper nuvi

Had my 220 for nearly 2 years you can create routes in mapsource or basecamp no problem , I have also copied other peoples routes no problem.
great little unit just be aware the cradle is not powered the power comes from a seperate lead which can be a little faff sometimes but handy when you want to use the unit in the car just need 2 chargers battery life is good around 4 hours though .

We get quite a few people through using the 220, all our routes download OK, the only comment I would make is that the download/recalculating time is a little long. Not too much of a problem with one route at a time but often I am asked for a selection of our routes (I have about 40 now).

For bike use when touring the ability to plan and download routes is invaluably. Yes you can input your destination into the unit but your options then are fastest or shortest, this might be OK if you are stuck in a car but on a bike it's far more about the journey. Most of my routes don't take the fastest or the shortest route-just the most interesting, taking in the best roads/views etc. Not impossible to do on a cheap Sat Nav I know but a lot of work compared to letting me download routes while you have breakfast!

John

thanx

I have bought a 220 now and am happy to find that i can both create and download routes. Basecamp is rather strange :(and will take some getting used to but only had a couple of hours on it.
ta again for comments.
