Zumo 400

I have a quest and recently got hold of a second hand zumo 400 (40 quid).... What a bloody ace piece of kit... All the maps are available for free if you know where to look, of course i paid for all mine:cool:. After having a quest for a year and picking my maps carefully due to the tiny memory ive put all of the 2008 maps, all of morocco and 4000 custom POIs on it and i still have 700mb left on a 2 gb card...

I dont think any other brand has the flexibility and usefulness of mapsource to fall back on either... could be wrong but i dont think so.

One word.. FANTASTIC.

Been thinking of one of these 400s, I dont want too expensive but do want mp3 with it. I am no good at technical computer stuff are they easy to use for a techno nerd??

Hi Phil, i am much the same with GPS stuff, thats why i bought the 400, and not the 550.
The basic stuff like, the ability to see where you are, or find a street / road is all i really need, and having the ability for listening to MP3's is a bonus.

Where i find it gets more technical is when you try to plan journeys on the computer using mapsource and loading it onto the Zumo.

The same can also be said for music, in particular the MP3 tracks, again you have to figure out if you need to "convert" your music to the MP3 format, then sort out play lists to load onto the Zumo. I found Windows Media Player to complicated to do this, and tried a program Called Media Monkey, recommended over on the Zumo Forums. After a while i figured out how to use it and now have about 100 tracks, all in play lists from different artists.

You will probably need a 2 Gig SD Memory card, as the 400 doesn't have a lot of spare memory. My Memory.com supplied me with a 2Gig card for £6.99 post free from Jersey.

Theres a lot of good advise around here, and i can recommend the Zumo forums http://www.zumoforums.com/ ( you have to register to get full access)as a great resource for learning, lots of tutorials and pics / screen shots on all topics.

The 400 does not ship with Mapsource, so my recomendation would be spend more for a 500 or 550

Alright, you can do without street names text to speech and also without bluetooth, but you really cannot do without mapsource cos that is what makes the Garmins so useful

:D

Mapsource is a free download from the Garmin website

Ah yes I tunes is mp4 and you need mp3??? how do you change that around??

Quote from the Garmin website:
WARNING: This software will not work unless you already own a MapSource product.
:bounce1

Well of course it won't, Mapsource shows the maps you've got on your GPS on your PC, if you haven't got a GPS then it's feck all use :D

Create a new MP3 playlist in itunes go to edit>preferences and a new dialog will open up. Choose the advanced tab in this dialog and go to the importing tab within this on the "import using tab" choose mp3 instead of AAC. Go to your playlist and instead of dragging songs to it from your library go to file> import and navigate to the M4a's that you want to convert using the browse dialog. Re-import the selected files and they will be converted to MP3's. The only downside of this is that you end up with MP3 and m4a versions of your songs in your library. However, its easy to ID the mp3's and m4a versions by having the option of "kind" selected in the song table in the library. Do this by right clicking in the header column of the song table and selecting "Kind" as a header option and planking it somewhere you can see the it on screen. You can set your ipod prefs just to sync with m4a's. By the way I don't even have an ipod but have a wife and two daughters that do! Me and my son have MP3 players :blast

Zumo 400 - help needed!

Hi guys,

Just new to the forum. I bought a Zumo 400 and cant work out how to load the maps from the DVD - Europe 2008NT DVD. When I load a map it displaces the previous one that was on it... I have a 2GB SD card so shouldnt be anything to do with this.
Do I need to have Mapsource (will download) to load the maps on to device?
The only icon I can see on the DVD other than a tutorial on Mapsource is Setup.exe. This seems to only prompt me to load a map strainght on to the zumo - and unfortunately displacing the last one.
Can anyone advise how you are supposed to load the new maps in (and keep the old ones)? Many thanks!!!

"The updated disc contains different regions in Europe and if you load one region it will delete the previous one from the Zumo. Is this a memory issue? Do I need to get additional SD cards or additional memory? "

Did you ever figure out how to resolve this?? I have the same problem, and have tried a 2GB card, doesnt seem to make any difference....

Any thoughts??

Benj
