I've just wired my 550 zumo into the canbus socket behind the headlamp of my 2010 GSA using a OEM lead.
I've heard that zumo cradles can draw a current even when The ignition is off, is this the case with this set up?
Also I didn't install a fuse, relying on the canbus, is this ok
the zumo doesn' appear to auto switch off, or even ask if continue on battery. Any help gratefully appreciated please

Whilst I can't directly answer your questions, I can let you know my experiences for comparative purposes. I have the Zumo 550, cradle installed by BMW dealer Bahnstormers. I'm not aware of any issues with power being drawn when ignition is off (when in use daily or when garaged for short periods), although I have not tested this with a meter or anything.

When I have the Zumo in the cradle, and turn the bike off, I am prompted by the device to "continue on battery or turn off" (or similar message).

As strod says above. I have a Zumo 660, but - remember that there will be a delay after turning the key off before the canbus kills the power to the unit. It's at that point it will prompt you about switching off or stay on battery.
Just give it a try.
I tend to take the key out the bike and then touch the button to turn the GPS off before going to a shop or whatever if I need to leave the bike as a blank screen draws less attention to it from people.

Mine is set up on the canbus system, after the ignition is switched off it stays on for 2 mins then asks to continue on battery power, always switches itself off if i forget.
Mine is left on the bike always, my bike lives outside!, and with the recent very cold weather in North Devon, -11 last few nights it's started first time, not ridden it for 2 weeks now.
No current draw whatsoever.
Try disconnecting and reconnecting or resetting the zumo.:thumb2

The above answers are all good.

Remember that its not really a case of the zumo bracket drawing a current when it wants to, its more a case of it drawing a current when the bike lets it.

Once the bike turns the power off then the zumo cannot draw any current at all. On my RT the zumo is permanantly fitted & powered off the socket you describe. It never causes any problems at all.

Yes - mine has a good 30 - 40 second delay before the '..continue on battery...' question comes up. Wired into the Canbus - all is fine! :thumb

Mine works as in the above responses with the exception that if I turn on the BMW fitted alarm after switching off the ignition, but before the canbus has killed the power to the Zumo, the cradle stays live. Dealer reckons that it's because it's not BMW version of the Zumo. I seem to think that it hasn't always done this and feel that it's one of the quirks of Canbus. Not a problem now that I know about it.

Can bus quirks

The shutdown message changes by the day on my bike, one day it's about thirty seconds, next day upto five mins. Strange:confused:

One thing to avoid is parking up for the day, not waiting for the shutdown then shutting the zumo off. For some reason the later can bus shutdown causes the zumo to power up on batteries. Leaves the zumo flat as a pancake next day.

That problem is well documented on the zumo forums.

Roger.

Thank you guys. Zumo all set up and running, cept that it has trouble finding satellites in my snowbound garage :(

Does anyone recommend using an in line fuse or is the canbus sufficient?

It will draw a small current when off if the Zumo's battery needs charging. I don't think the cradle will though, I believe it's a passive device. If it's not switching off or asking then it's because it can draw enough current to operate and thinks you're still riding the bike. You could simply switch it off manually.

No need for a fuse, canbus sorts it.

Roger.

That's interesting, didn't realise that. In every situation?
So what does it do - detect too much current draw and shut down the supply? So every power circuit has some sensor on it?

Yes...

Yes, any load beyond what t expects shuts the circuit. Try plugging something beyond 5 amps into the acc socket. That will trip out but reset with ignition on.
