Well after well over 4 years sterling service my 550 just gave up the ghost and refused to switch on :tears

Tried taking out the battery, pressing the on button at the same time as the + button but no good. Left it to charge on the mains charger overnight and still no good :(

Sods law as I only updated the maps a couple of week ago :blast

Phoned Garmin and they will repair or replace it for £111 which is I guess better than spending £400 on a new one.

So posted it off this morning and will see how long it takes to get back to me. They have at least promised that I can transfer my lifetime map updates to the new unit if it is replaced :thumb

Will see how long it takes to get back to me.

Be interested to see if you get back a 550.They were out of stock on 550`s a short while ago and were sending out 660`s.Let us know.

Will do - was hoping for another 550 as already have mounts on 2 different bikes and prefer the more compact design of the 550.
If a 660 turns up with all the bits then I guess I can sell my old mounts and buy an extra 660 mount - so not the end of the world.

I sent my 550 off for repair, and four days later a 660 arrives by courier. At first I thought --Great--- Then started looking at the problems, having to re-do power supplies on two bikes, but what the hell, NOH unit, 2012 maps, all mounts etc for 110£. Cann't be bad.

After 3 months just about used to the 660, but I still think the 550 screen was easier to see in bright sunlight.

Checked the Garmin site today and "Your product was shipped on 09 January 2012" - will hopefully see what turns up tomorrow ;)

Garmin are very good at swap outs. They have been with me in the past with marine units. You can even ride down to their HQ and swap the thing over yourself.

But I get the feeling a lot of their units malfunction.

I am a TomTom man now. And if I had to replace that it would be some cheap Chinese unit as they are more than capable of doing the job.

The result!

So what do you get back from Garmin now when you send them your old 550?

A refurbed/new 550 and absolutely nothing else ;)

Fine by me as I prefer the 550 over the 660 and the unit they sent back looks new to me. Only bit I am not entirly happy with is that my old unit had the latest 2012.3 mapping on it and this has come with 2010.10 mapping on it :blast

After the usual hassels finally managed to use my lifetime updates on it and it now has the latest maps.

All in all happy with the service from Garmin :thumb2
