Hi,

I have just got my Zumo 550 mounted on my bike through the canbus system thanks to this site :beerjug: , everything is working fine but I have one question about making phone calls, I have paired my phone ok but when i plug in my stereo head set from my phone..(3.5mm jack) I can hear calls from my side but they cannot hear me :nenau . is this the case for mobile phone head sets? if so what is my best option.. cheers

My understanding is that the phone syncs with the Zumo so that the calls can be controlled through the Zumo but you have to communicate via an intercom. The hardwire intercoms use leads to plug into the Zumo, or you can use a bluetooth intercom and connect to the Zumo.

From what you've said there I understand that you've plugged your phone headset into the Audio out socket of the Zumo. Have a look at page 50 of the manual, you can see that on the side of the mount there is audio out and a mic socket. You'll need to connect to the latter to get a hard wired connection to work. For this the best solution would be an intercom such as Autocom or Starcom system that have decent noise cancelling mics. However, this approach isn't going to be be cheap unless you do the research and buy used kit off eBay or similar. Alternatively, you might want to consider a Bluetooth headset and do away with wires (but introduce batteries into the equation). Bear in mind that the Bluetooth on the 550 isn't A2DP so won't be stereo for music if that's important to you, stereo will work by going hard-wired however.

I'm just about to delve into phone connectivity via my Garmin (Nuvi 765T) and my Autocom having received the specific cable for Christmas. There is apparently an issue though with the input from the audio being cut to 50% when you speak which might make phone use problematic, we'll see...

Thank you :beerjug: ..will try the 2.5mm jack..just looking around for my best option for answering calls and listening to music if I choose to do so..

Any regular mic will be next to useless for use on a bike. You should be able to pull over and make and receive calls without removing your helmet though. On the move forget it.

A decent noise cancelling mic as fitted to decent intercoms would be a revelation, the party on the other end will be none the wiser and will fall off their chair in shock if you let on that you're on a bike doing 80mph down the motorway.

I already have the older Bluetooth module fitted to my Autocom and use this exclusively to connect to my phone. The new lead (cost more than the intercom ) hard wires both the audio out and the mic on my Garmin. The advantage of the lead, if it works, is that I'll be able to control the phone though the sat nav, see who's calling etc. All at a stand-still of course... Though the ability to receive a call on the move, if safe to do so, is handy.

There are issues with the 550 and the Autocom if you go down this route.

Best advice is on the Zumo Forums:

Yep, thanks Tom. I had read that and Wiz's comments on the Bikers Oracle site. Conveniently forgotten when on the Autocom stand at the NEC  How can they sell a lead for £45 that doesn't work, beats me. Have yet to try it but if what Wiz says is true, and I don't have a reason to doubt his knowledge on the subject, then I'm not going to be too happy with Autocom. Hence why I commented above "if it works".
