Ok looking but new gps, sold my colorado witht he bike.

so 550 looks more bike friendly and visually seems be more rugged.

touratech in germany have an offer on both with lifetime mapping, cradle and so on. 660 is around 60 euro more than 550

but tell me this and tell me no more is the 660 miles ahead or are they very much different?

i like the 550 and 660 looks too flimsy for me. but in saying that rather not buy an item that will be discontinued in few months and could have gotten more advanced unit?

www.cameracentre.ie has special on Zumo 550 for €300.00, doesn't say what mapping included

I think you'll find the 550 is already effectively out of date as you can't fit the whole of the latest EU mapping onto it. The 660 does not have that problem, yet.

If you trash a 660 I'd guess the 550 wouldn't be much more use than a bad door stop. If you're that likely to trash a GPS I'd suggest using maps.

I just downloaded the latest EU maps. If you remove the extra voices you can fit western europe onto it, and the other sections can go on a cheap memory card, so capacity isn't that big a deal.

Most people don't need more than Western europe anyway.

660 is newer obviously, but slightly bigger/more chocolatey...
I got mine as a re-furb unit (done by Garmin) from Pentagon GPS in engerlundshire somewhere. Easily googles and at the time the price was right. Don't fear a Garmin refurbished unit. The fittings were all new and bagged.
I bought a lifetime update from Garmin. Again, it does it but be sensible if there's a new update - everyone tries at the same time!
Also check eBay and badger Harley dealers as I don't think they shifted as many of their units as suspected.
Same thing but with Hardly-Ableson on the front. I nearly got one but the refurb unit was less. HD dealers deffo worth a shout. Mine's on a touratech bracket on touratech rails. Up as high as possible behind the screen on the GSA.
Pm if you want a pic of it.

Bought a new (refurb) 660 from TT and the NEC. Love it ! Had a 550 before this one and so far, I prefer the 660 (kiss of death now, I guess :augie)
The 550 feels a bit more 'rugged', but I tend to take care of all my toys, so not really bothered. I do prefer the larger screen of the 660. As for the features, haven't a clue yet which is better, but I would like to think the 660 would be by natural progression. So so far, :thumb2 for the 660.

cheers, might look at geting the 660 so in next few days if funds allow.

pitty never kept 550 and just upgrade it

The 660 does have that problem since the latest mapping update (confirmed by a call to Garmin). I had a 550 (which my wife now uses) and have had a 660 for the last two Europe trips. If I had to buy again today it would be the 660 without doubt. There have been a couple of backward steps, the hard to get at micro SD card and USB connector, but neither is a good enough reason to go back to the 550.

As far as rugged is concerned, they are both plastic boxes with screens. There is absolutely nothing to choose between them. The 550 looks more solid with its chunky design and black panels but its just looks. The slim 660 is just as tough and a lot easier to slip in the pocket when leaving the bike.

INO - the deal-clincher was the mount of the unit.
On the 550 the connecting pins sit on the bottom of the cradle and we found that the pins were subject to corrosion and failure. Yes one can douse it with lubricant, however the 660's connector system is far better and not problematic at all.

Agree. When I got the 660 I was a little worried about the quick "clip on" mount but after 18 months use it is no problem and much better than the 550 with the terrible security screw, difficulty in lining the unit up with the mount when fitting and sticky locating pins when removing.

Both our 550 and 660 are now on TT locking mounts to give a little more security when paying for fuel etc. Again the 660 is easier to fit and remove.

Got a 550 on the work bike, and the security screw is a PITA ;)

Own bike its a 660... happy with it... like the quick release... never had a problem :thumb

I've had the 660 for a year now. Its been excellent when I've used it on the bike and in the car. I was a bit twitchy about the bike mount supplied with it so I got the lockable touratech mount for peace of mind if nothing else. I have read that some probs have happend after people have updated maps etc. But "touch wood" mine has behaved OK

@Andyclift - a couple of updates ago the whole of Europe wouldn't load onto the 660, but a month or so ago there was a subsequent update and the maps then did load. (Ok, not incl. Turkey etc)
There was a software update when I connected it a few days ago but no probs.

660 it is so.

think the mounting/charging and water ingress of the 550 was big pusher for me now decide the 660

cheers lads and lassies

This is nonesense, had my 550 for about four years now, used in all weathers and is totally watertight...

funny that and lot complain about the reverse.

ah looks like be just banking on newer is better for the 660
