zumo 550 which power

I have had a few problems with my 550 and have been told that the problem of the unit going to the battery power when starting the engine, may be down to the canbus lead. Can anyone advise me if wiring the Zumo to the back of the accesory socket instead of plugging in to the canbus is better. What are the pros and cons.

I understood that just about every GS from the 1100 on load sheds on start up and therefore they'd all make the Zumo go to internal power on start. Only way I'd guess with a 1200 / F800 is to wire the zumo direct to the bikes battery, via a fuse.

I understand what your saying but why doesnt the Zumo change over to bike power after starting and why bother selling a connecting lead for the Zumo to the canbus connection.

Either your zumo is faulty as it doesn't switch back to bike power after engine starting, or your canbus supplied power is faulty. Have you tried seeing if the accessory socket doesn't power back up after start up, as IIRC, they're on the same circuit?

it should change over straight away, as John says either your zumo is fecked or the canbus lead is.

The 1200 has quite a history of it deciding what it will power and when it wants to on the accessory socket and canbus connector front. If I was a betting person I'd get the bike checked out first.

Back in 2008 when I got my R1200GS my dealer flat-out refused to sell me the CANBus connector, and in the interests of expediency I got them to fit an extra accessory socket in the beak. You can get an DIN plug for pennies and wire it up to the Zumo lead.

With that set-up, I find that when the bike starts the Zumo momentarily goes over to some error about USB connection being lost, but comes back to bike power right away.

Getting an extra accessory socket isn't cheap but it works well for me. Wiring into the existing one is probably as good as getting an extra one fitted.

some dealers refuse to sell it and some dont.. its about £13 and u can get them.
