ZUMO 660 - Don't be too "rugged"?

this happened to mine. i cleaned it out with, IIRC, brake cleaner, WD40 and an air line. i never dismantled it.

I had same problem and put up with it until the unit died, when I paid for a refurbished unit as I was out of warranty.

Yours is under warranty, so ring up and get a returns number etc. They'll send you a new one.

Its interesting to note that the Zumo 660 is rated as IPx7 as per their website (
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=135&pID=15000).

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_Code, this means that the Zumo can be submersed in water up to 1 metre deep for up to 30 minutes (the 7 in IPx7), but has not been tested for protection against objects. It seems that IPx7 is a standard rating for marine products.

I find it a bit odd that given that the Zumo is targeted at motorcyclists, its not tested for foreign object penetration (i.e. dust and dirt) as thats precisely the environment that we ride in. Potentially there's a not-fit-for-purpose-sale-of-goods thing there...

i don't think any foreign bodies enter the unit, they get jammed between the switch button and the unit body AFAICT. the seal must be below the button itself.

poor design. seems to not be enough clearance around the button.

Hence this issue comes about because it is not tested for foreign object ingress. If it was for example rated at IP67, then this issue should not occur.

I agree its poor design for motorcycling GPS unit, but products are designed to a spec, and the clearly the Garmin spec in this case does not require prevention of dirt & dust. Odd.
