My Zumo 660 has failed after 2 and a half years of abuse off road and being dropped several times. It won't lock on to satellites any more and randomly restarts itself. If I shake it theres something loose inside...

I was going to just order another one but as they are still around £450 new I thought I'd ring Garmin for a repair price.

For £135 they will deliver you with a refurbished unit when you send you broken one in....which strikes me as remarkably good value.

What struck me as odd was that the guy that took my call said that most folk seem to think that £135 is a bit steep...

The way I see it, I effectively get a new unit delivered for a measly £135. Well I'm happy !

I've used their replacement service and it is truly first class.

I sent old one on Monday and received replacement on Wednesday.

I sent them just the unit, and they sent a full pack including all mounts etc.

I recommend it:thumb2

Just on the offchance you know anyone else with one try swapping the battery. Mine kept randomly switching off and restarting and all it was was the battery terminal had come off inside the plastic wrapping. New battery and all is good now.

the on/off switch goes sticky too, and can cause similar rebooting symptoms.

Yes - the on/off switch is foobar too, and suspected to be the cause of the random rebooting. For ages the only way to switch it off has been to take it off the power supply or remove the battery.

To be honest, my Zumo is fekked. Even the screen is scratched.

I can't see them refurbishing it...unless their repair department is staffed by leprechauns that get paid two grains of sweetcorn a day.

Did the replacement unit have updated maps ?
Not that I would abuse such an excellent service but I have been thinking about sending mine back for a dodgy switch.....and it could do with new maps anyway.

I suspect they replace like for like. I don't think they'll fall for that old chestnut.

Lifetime map updates are only £75.

Had my 2.5 year old 660 replaced this week for 135.31 - excellent service, just the unit, not all the mounts etc. New maps (well 2012.10 - I think there's .30 out??) were installed on it.

I've asked them how I get 2012.10 on to my computers, but not heard back yet.

Excellent service.

cheers

You can upgrade online. They will talk you through it on the phone if it's too difficult. See my previous post above re lifetime updates.

i had a problem with my 550 and they sent me a 660 in exchange for a bit less and because i had the lifetime maps they were updated for me and when i went onto the website to update my account it had already been updated with the new units number etc

Had a reply - got, in effect, a new "NuMap One Time" handed to me via "MySupport" so downloaded it to 660 and 2 x PC's. So now got the latest-super-duper version at 2012.30 - Me happy? Rather.

This is why I keep buying Garmins.

cheers

£135 is OK if you've had the 660 for years and dropped it etc. However, if it just stops working one day, a month after it's warranty expires, and you've never done anything bad to it, it feels like a bit of a rip-off.
